Chrome dyeing : the role of soluble proteins / David G. King in COLORATION TECHNOLOGY, Vol. 125, N° 3 (2009)
[article]
Titre : Chrome dyeing : the role of soluble proteins Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David G. King, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p. 161-163 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : A significant factor preventing the achievement of zero chromium in the effluent from the after-chrome dyeing process is the presence of soluble proteins in the dyebath. These proteins can react with the dichromate anion and thus interfere with its reaction with the wool fibre and dye molecules. This understanding may lead to the development of very low chromium in effluent dyeing methods that ensure the viability of chrome dyeing. ThermochromieIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The objective of this work was to study how ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, washing and rubbing can influence colour and dynamic qualities of chromic textiles, and to explore how the results attained can be applied by designers for the development of colour changing palettes. The experimental work was conducted with 74% polyamide and 26% elastane elastics screen printed with thermochromic, photochromic and hydrochromic pigments in diverse colours. Initially, colourfastness properties of each pigment type versus colour were assessed. Although washing and rubbing can interfere in samples' colours by becoming lighter at different degrees, the results attained highlight the poor stability to lighting of thermochromic and photochromic pigments, which also present changes between hues along exposure time. For conventional textile applications, poor colour fastness commonly represents a limitation. This work proposes that the way textile colours and behaviour are permanently affected by the studied conditions can be interpreted as a creative variable in the design process. Research samples with a combination of pigments were developed and tested with a combination of cycles of different fastness tests, namely one washing cycle for every 4 h of UV light exposure, totalling 48 h and 12 washing cycles. Results demonstrate the possibility of creating interactive surfaces capable of displaying a wide range of colours that evolve to static within different hues, over stimuli conditions. With the microfading technique, developed to test the light fastness of a tiny test area on objects of cultural value, this comparison is made by absolute colour change after exposure. This article presents a new approach to enhance data interpretation of light-fastness tests by the use of the rate of colour change. The procedure is combined with the conventional classification process using absolute colour change. The new classification system with the rate of colour change was applied to 44 samples, 13 of them were classified in more sensitive Blue Wool categories when analysing the rate of colour change. The perspective of rate of colour change helps to enhance data interpretation especially of samples showing fading characteristics different from the light-fastness standards. Argile

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The aim of this work was to assess the possibility of using a bentonite-type clay as a promising substitute for mordants in the natural dyeing of wool with madder. Wool yarn was treated with nanoclay by using three conventional methods of pretreatment (before dyeing), simultaneous dyeing with madder in the presence of clay, and aftertreatment (after dyeing). Madder was used as a natural source of colorant. The scientific methods employed in this study included Fourier Transform-infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, moisture regain measurement, tensile strength tests, reflectance spectrophotometry, and fastness evaluation. The intensity of the major peaks in the Fourier Transform-infrared spectra of the nanoclay-treated wool yarn indicated chemical changes in the polypeptide functional groups in the wool structure. Madder exhibited higher dyeing properties on clay-pretreated samples compared with untreated wool. The results of colour measurements showed that the colour strength of the dyed samples improved with an increasing amount of clay in the pretreatment baths.

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : In this research, the effect of carbon dioxide laser irradiation on various properties of raw and bleached cotton fabrics, including fabric weight, bending rigidity, wetting, and air permeability, as well as dyeing, was examined and compared. The experiments were carried out at three different laser powers ranging from 4.5 to 6 W to determine the effect of laser treatment on fabric properties. In particular, the influence of laser irradiation on the dyeing properties of treated fabrics with CI Reactive Blue 198 was studied. The colour change of laser-treated fabrics was determined by calculation of the K/S values as a function of fabric reflectance. The morphological changes in laser-treated fabrics were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of laser treatment on the properties of raw and bleached cotton fabrics were varied. For instance, the wettability of raw cotton samples was reduced after laser irradiation, whereas the wettability of bleached cotton fabrics was greater. Possible reasons for the various dyeing behaviours observed with irradiation at different laser powers are discussed.
