Measurement of colour difference in the leather dyeing process with natural dyes in JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF LEATHER TECHNOLOGISTS & CHEMISTS (JSLTC), Vol. 87, N° 1 (01-02/2003)
[article]
Titre : Measurement of colour difference in the leather dyeing process with natural dyes Type de document : texte imprimé Année de publication : 2003 Article en page(s) : p. 25-29 Note générale : Bibliogr.

First of all, chrome-tanned leather is treated with two types of tanning agents (Al and Cr) to manufacture wet-blue and wet-white leather. After the tanning process, various colouring matters and the powder-type natural dye were applied to the leather and, on the basis of the Munsell value function, the chromaticity diagram of the colour system and characteristics such as hue, value and chroma were measured.
The colour deepened markedly according to the amount of natural dye used, and multiple colours were obtained depending on the mordant in use.
The quality of leather was outstanding, test results gave grade 4 or 5 in such categories as colour fastness to rub, wash, heat and light. In addition, the colour was brighter and cleaner on the wet-white non-chrome tanned leather than on the wet-blue.Note de contenu : - Materials and equipment

The fire performance of developed coatings has been assessed by employing international standard procedures. The cables coated with such coating showed significant improvement in circuit failure time in power cable. Developed coating was also found effective in reducing rate and amount of smoke in the event of fire. During exposure, the coating swelled to form spongy, cellular insulating foam which acts as an effective barrier against the conduction of heat to the surface and to the core of electric cable specimen. Tannage Résumé : Chrome tanning is the most important and widely used tanning method in leather manufacture hitherto. However, chromium discharge may be a serious environmental concerned pollutant in leather processing, which originates from both chrome tanning and post-tanning operations. In order to minimize the emissions of chromium from the whole leather processing, a novel leather processing method integrating high chromium exhaustion and low chromium leaching-out based on the application of methanesulfonic acid (MSA) was designed and optimized. The results indicated that, being superior to the conventional processes, the chrome tanning and retanning processes with MSA were conducted at a high beginning pH (5.0) smoothly and the total chromium utilization ratio was increased to 95.8% from 81.0% in the novel processes. Accordingly, the total Cr dosage was decreased by 26.7% around, the residual Cr concentrations in each chrome-containing wastewater was decreased by 44%-85%, varying with the operations, and the total Cr discharge generated in the whole leather processing was reduced by 83.8% around, from 2.737 kg/t salted-wet hide to 0.443kg/t salted-wet hide before next chrome precipitation treatment. The area yields, mechanical properties and organoleptic properties of the leather from the new method were comparable with that from conventional processes.
