The desire to stay young at all costs, particularly where the skin is concerned, is a dream that many would like to come true. Although this is a difficult challenge for researchers, determination and continuous work is bringing them closer every day.
In their quest for "youth" SEPPIC's researchers propose some solutions for new fights against skin ageing process.Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Causes and damages of skin ageing process ?

Vieillissement cutané -- PréventionIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Pollution is on the increase worldwide and presents a considerable health risk, especially in urban environments. Skin, as our biggest organ and the barrier between the organism and the outside world, is directly exposed to ambient pollution. We can remove the pollutants by daily cleansing, or protect skin to some extent by applying a physical film to shield it from harmful pollutants, but for full protection we need to strengthen the skin's own barrier function.
We therefore investigated a number of actives for their capacity to increase skin resilience to common airborne pollutants. Based on the results of this skin biological research, we identified actives that demonstrated protective effects and integrated them into a novel concept affording comprehensive anti-pollution protection and relief for vulnerable skin.
Because epigenetic changes may be implicated in changes to phenotypic appearance linked to environmental pollution, we included the new field of epigenetics in out research. Investigation of various potential epigenetic marks revealed that the specific micro-RNA miR-450b-5p, which is associated with cellular senescence, could demonstrate environmentally stressed changes. We therefore conducted a study to investigate the effects of a topical test material on this epigenetic biomarker when stressed with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon benzo(a)pyrene (BaP).Note de contenu : - THE NEED FOR A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO ANTI-POLLUTION SKIN PROTECTION

Vieillissement cutané -- PréventionIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Environmental pollution now-a-days is considered one of the main causes of skin ageing. Among the pollutants, tobacco smoke and PM2.5 (particulate matter) are thought to be the major health hazardous components responsible for skin in-flammation, pigmentation, and wrinkling, as evident from sporadic clinical and epidemiological studies. Our objective was to develop a plant-based natural ingredient that could suppress the detrimental effects of those two pro-minent pollutants on human skin tells. Normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK) and normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) were exposed to PM2.5 and tobacco smoke, respectively, for the induction of inflammation and collagenase activity. Various plant extracts were screened for their efficacy in showing anti-ageing properties against these pollutants. We showed that our unique extract, Ougon, was able to suppress the tobacco smoke-induced expression of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (an enzyme responsible for the degradation of extracellular matrix) in NHDF by inhibiting the expression of CYP1B1 (a member of the cytochrome p450 family). Moreover, Ougon was found to have strong efficacy in inhibiting the PM2.5-induced expression of some inflammatory mediators (e.g. IL-113, IL-6, and IL-8) in NHEK in concentration-dependent manners. Therefore, we suggest that Ougon extract may protect the MMP-1 and inflammation-mediated ageing of skin induced by environmental stress factors.
