Modern life is constantly challenged by the presence of micro organisms and their associated potential dangers. Consumers are increasingly aware of the need for a hygienic life style, particularly in light of recent MRSA scares in hospitals. There is very apparent with the significant increase in the range of antimicrobial products now available in the market. Other market sectors have been influenced as they strive to provide anti-microbial properties fot their products. This has been successfully introduced in the plastics industry for example in the Far East where nano silver particles have been used for electronic domestic appliances. Companies are looking to transfer this success to related markets with a number of trials already ongoing for hygienic coating applications in Europe. The excellent anti-microbial properties of silver are already widely know in the medical profession. Catheters are the most common source of infection in hospitals, however this risk can be significantly reduced by applying silver to these devices. This is obviously very expensive and would not be commercially viable for coatings in hospitals. However nano silver particles offer a solution, due to their large surface area only low concentrations are required to effectively kill the bacteria. This offers the coatings industry a cost effective way to take advantage of the existing high profile of silver in the medical profession. This could be expanded into other areas requiring hygienic coatings for example food processing plants, restaurants, schools and public buildings.Note de contenu : - Review of anti-microbial products

The technical and application challenges that arose provoded an opportunity to demonstrate how excellence in customer service and technical co-operation between supplier and consumer can result in a commercially viable product.
Vacuum-metallised pigments (VMPs) are different from 'conventional' aluminium metallic pigments and formulating with them must be application specific. The nature, effects and versatility of the use of VMPs in diverse applications are described below.Note de contenu : - BACKGROUND TO VACUUM-LETALLISED PIGMENTS : The technical challenge

Souplesse (mécanique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Photochromic materials whose color can reversibly change under visible light exposure are good candidates for many applications like photooptical sensors, smart inks and paints, displays or optical storage. Among these materials, inorganic Ag:TiO2 films have been proven to be stable over time and to exhibit multicolor photochromism leading to potential high-performance systems. However, their fabrication processes are often based on laboratory equipment not adapted to industrialization and usually involve thermal treatments not compatible with soft materials, which limit the application range. The present paper proposes an alternative way to produce photochromic Ag:TiO2 films compatible with industrialization and with soft substrates. An aqueous ink, made of a dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles and silver ions, was formulated from a commercial TiO2 suspension and a silver salt by adding a thickener and a surfactant to satisfy inkjet process requirements. The inkjet printing process was optimized on polyethylene terephthalate substrates to form thin inorganic films after IR annealing. Such a process can be adapted to any kind of substrates, in particular flexible and non-heat-resistant substrates, and can be scaled at the industrial level. The photochromic behavior of the fabricated films was finally assessed successfully after an activation step. ThiolsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films were surface-modified according to microwave plasma activation allowing for dithiol functions grafting (1,6-hexanedithiol) in order to fabricate self-assembled photogenerated silver nanoparticles monolayers. The present study was carried out in constant discharge power conditions and the impact of the plasma treatment on PET wettability properties were reported. PET material modifications were characterized at various stages of the process : plasma activation, dithiol functionalization, and nanosilver grafting according to several experimental techniques : water contact angle measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface topography was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Finally, antibacterial properties of PET material including silver nanoparticles were evaluated to determine the probability to reduce the surface bacterial adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus strain selected as pathogenic bacteria model. Surface grafted with silver nanoparticles was found to be particularly reactive and led to an inhibition of S. aureus adhesion around 96.2% in comparison with the unmodified PET material.

TriéthoxysilaneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : UV-curable antibacterial organic–inorganic hybrid coatings were prepared by sol–gel method. Triethoxysilane-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (TESi-PDMS) as a new coupling agent to improve the compatibility between organic and inorganic phases was synthesized. PDMS-based urethane methacrylate oligomer was obtained by reacting isophorone diisocyanate with hydroxyethyl methacrylate and hydroxyl-terminated PDMS. The formulations were applied onto polycarbonate panels and then cured by UV radiation. Physical properties of UV-cured free films such as gel content, stress–strain, and conversion of acrylate double bond were examined. In addition, the antibacterial effects of the coatings were investigated. Nanosilver-containing formulations exhibited high antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that thermal stability of the hybrids was significantly higher than the organic polymer. Contact angle measurement showed that addition of silane precursor increased the contact angle from 95° to 110°.
