Tannage Résumé : Chrome-tanned leathers have good comprehensive properties but, tannery effluents with high salinity, chromium and leather scraps containing chromium have a serious environmental impact. Non-chrome tannage is one of tannages that can reduce the pollution. Current non-chrome tanned leather can't, unfortunately meet the needs of the leather market regarding shrinkage temperature, softness, handle and other properties. In this study, a novel combination tannage was developed. The novel non-chrome tanning agent SL was directly employed to tan bated bovine hide producing wet-white. The shaved wet-white was further tanned by Tara, Sellatan RL and Lutan BN and was then fatliquored. It was found that the optimal consumption of the tannins — novel non-chrome tanning agent SL, Tara, Sellatan RL and Lutan BN was 5wt % for SL (based on 150% times of the weight of bated hide pelt) and 6wt% for each of the other three tannins (based on the weight of the shaved wet¬white). The shrinkage temperature of the finished leather can reach over 100°C and the leather has good softness, handle and mechanical properties. Compared with the traditional chrome tanning the conventional pickling process was eliminated, thus the process was shortened and the pollution by sodium chloride was reduced. The quality of the non-chrome leather approaches that of chrome-tanned leather. The non-chrome leathers of pilot production have been approved and accepted by the leather market. Température de retraitIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : A non-pickling combination tanning based on reactive benzenesulphonate (rBS) and Tannic acid (TA) has been developed for the chrome-free leather manufacturing. By optimizing the tanning process, the two-bath combination tanning with 4% rBS and 10% TA at the final pH 3.0-3.5 can raise the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of goatskins to -86°C. Morphological analysis results reveal that the chrome-free leather exhibits a clear even grain surface and isolated collagen fiber network structure. The novel combination tanning approach not only improves light fastness, but also confers high physical and mechanical properties to the chrome-free leather which can meet the Chinese standard requirements for furniture leather and shoe upper leather. The non-pickling tanning without use of salt or acid is also benefit to clean leather-making production. Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Combination tanning using vegetable tannins and oxazolidine E has been proved to be preferred alternative to chrome tanning. But this kind of tannage has not been widely applied partly owing to the high price of oxazolidine E. In this study, a new oxazolidine tanning agent, Oxazolidine SCU, was synthesized by using cheap and readily obtained raw materials, and its tanning properties both alone and in combination with vegetable tannins, were investigated. Oxazolidine SCU possesses high reactivity with skin collagen. Tanned by 5 % oxazolidine SCU under room temperature at pH8.0, the shrinkage temperature of goatskin leather was around 83°C. In vegetable combination tanning, oxazolidine SCU exhibited a good synergistic tanning effect with condensed tannins. Among condensed tannins, mimosa is the preferred one in consideration of achieving high shrinkage temperature of leather. Tanning the depickled pelt with 10-15 % vegetable tannin at first, and then retanning with 4-6 % oxazolidine SCU for 4 hours at 60°C in the pH range 5.5-6.0, the shrinkage temperature of leather was 114-120°C. Tannage Résumé : In recent decades many studies have been conducted in order to understand the exact origin of Cr(VI) in leather and find, remedies for this problem and it seems that most tanners have resolved this issue in industry. However, in the present study a novel way to avoid Cr(VI) formation in leather by copper mordanting (CuSO4.5H2O) was investigated. 0.5 and 1.0% (w/w) of CuS04.5H2O were used bath standalone and also in combination with vegetable tannins which are commonly used in leather industry. From the results it was seen that bath, in standalone, and in combination usage with vegetable tannins, copper seems to be a solution against formation of Cr(VI) in leather and keeping the Cr(VI) values below the permissible limits. TranspirationIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Oxazolidines are heterocyclic derivatives obtained by the reaction of aminohydroxy compounds with aldehydes. The bifunctional behaviour of these oxazolidines is responsible for their cross-linking reactions with phenols and proteins. Two typical oxazolidines, namely 4,4-Dimethyl-1,3-oxazolidine and 1-Aza-3,7-dioxabicyclo-5-ethyl (3,3,0) Octane have been studied extensively for their use as tanning agents and it has been found that both these oxazolidines react with hide protein and impart special characteristics to leather when tanned in conjunction with syntan, chrome or vegetable tanning materials.
4,4-Dimethyl-1,3-oxazolidine has been found especially suitable for pretanning of greasy pickled sheepskins, subsequently to be degreased with aqueous degreasing systems. Pickled sheepskin even at 3-5 % level of application gives shrinkage temperatures around 70-75°C within an hour of treatment and unlike glutaraldehyde, the pretanned leather remains natural white and so may be finally tanned with syntan or zirconium for white leather.
1-Aza-3,7-dioxabicyclo-5-ethyl (3,3,0) Octane on the other hand has been found suitable for chrome or vegetable combination tannages of all kinds of leather, especially wool skin tannages where the wool remains spotless white even if the pH of the exhaust chrome liquor moves up to 4.5. Vegetable tanned leather pre-treated with 1-Aza-3,7-dioxabicyclo-5-ethyl (3,3,0) Octane gives higher degree of tannage, higher shrinkage temperature and about 50 % lower water solubles than conventional tannage. Normal vegetable tanned leather when retanned with about 10 % of 1-Aza-3,7-dioxa-bicyclo-5-ethyl (3,3,0) Octane for an hour gives a shrinkage temperature around 100°c. Fuither, it has been found that the use of oxazolidine affords better utilisation of chrome when used in chrome tanning. The reduced chrome content in the exhaust liquors helps in pollution control.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Effect of initial pH and time - Effect of concentration - Tannage in combination with chrome - Tannage in combination with vegetable tanning materials - Comparison with glutaraldehyde-chrome combination tannages.
