Tannage Résumé : Chrome-free leather manufacture is one of the major focuses of leather industry. In this work, a chrome-free tanning system based on highly-oxidized starch–zirconium complexes (HOS–Zr) was constructed. Particle size and charge properties analyses revealed that the small size (2.5 nm) and the low cationic species content (45.1%) of HOS–Zr at low pH facilitated its uniform penetration in leather at the initial stage of tanning, and the large size (89–169 nm) and the high cationic species content (77.5%) of HOS–Zr after basification contributed to its stable crosslinking between collagen fibers. A 3% HOS–Zr offer (based on the weight of ZrO2) imparted wet white with sufficient tanning effect. The physical properties of HOS–Zr crust leather were remarkably better than those of lactic acid–zirconium crust leather and were comparable to those of chrome crust leather. Wastewater in HOS–Zr tanning system showed a reduction in TOC load by 40.0% and higher biodegradability compared with chrome tanning system. As a result, this work provided a practical and sustainable approach to eliminate chrome in leather manufacture.
Quebracho est l'un des noms communs, en espagnol, d'au moins trois espèces similaires d'arbres originaires du Gran Chaco, en Amérique latine : Schinopsis lorentzii (quebracho colorado santiagueño), de la famille des Anacardiaceae ; Schinopsis balansae (quebracho colorado chaqueño), de la même famille ;

Tannage Résumé : With the expansion of market demand for chrome-free leathers, much attention has been paid to the safety in using them. Four kinds of chrome-free upper leathers made by Vegetable-Glutaraldehyde (Veg-GA), Glutaraldehyde-Vegetable (GA-Veg), Vegetable-Aluminium (Veg-AI) and a synthetic agent were subjected to accelerated ageing by hot air, UV light and Xe lamp respectively for 96 hours. The physical qualities and chemical indicators of these leathers before and after ageing, such as the shrinkage temperature (Ts), tensile strength, tear strength, colour difference, water vapour permeability, formaldehyde, phenol and aniline were tested. It was shown that some common rules apply to the four kinds of chrome-free upper leather samples after ageing, Xe-lamp ageing has made the tear strength, formaldehyde and phenol levels reduce the most and the aniline level increased the most. UV-light ageing has caused the maximum colour difference change whist hot-air ageing has caused the maximum Ts decrease. All of the ageing methods have enhanced the water vapour permeability. Summarising, leather samples made differently have different physical quality indicators after the same ageing treatment. As the basis of the leather quality change, it is found that the leather fibre turns into a bundle, curled, loose and distorted no matter what kind of ageing treatment is used.

Wet-white (tannage)
ZirconiumIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Tanning with basic chromium sulphate is the most commercially favoured process in the manufacture of a variety of high quality leathers. Environmental restrictions to the disposal of chromium containing solids and effluents, as well as speculations concerning the presence of toxic and carcinogenic chromium(VI) traces in leather products, have already directed the industry towards using alternatives. Wet-white tannages which consist of zirconium (IV) and aluminium (III) salts with high durability and resistance and organic alternatives which use phosphonium, aldehydes and some syntans both types with more eco friendly and biodegradable characteristics seem to be the main options for industry. However, properties like high hydrothermal stability, tensile strength, and thickness cannot be achieved by any alternative single tanning method. In this study, collagen hydrolysates derived from gelatin manufacture were used to improve wet-white leather performance properties through combination with tanning agents comprising zirconium and aluminium salts, phosphonium salts and aldehydes. The result shows that the apparent density, shrinkage temperature, denaturation temperature and strength properties of differently tanned leathers increased with the addition of collagen hydrolysates. SEM analyses show that collagen fibres are dispersed after tanning. Besides, collagen hydrolysates make the fibres loosen and the fullness of leather is increased.
