With consumers becoming increasingly environmentally aware and legislation becoming ever more stringent, the envirobment is slowly creeping up the business agenda. Europe is leading the way and setting a benchmark for the rest of the world, having serious implications for the majority of companies within the region. The inks market is no exception to this with regulations on health, safety and the environment becoming increasingly strict. This is with particular reference to legislation restricting Volative Organic Content (VOC) emissions to the atmosphere and the restriction of heavy metals content of coloured or printed packaging (CONEG regulations and European Directive 94/62/EC 1994). The need for ink markers to use colourants that meet these purity requirements has fuelled a surge in demand for aqueous flexo printed paper and packaging materials which comply. Artizan AF is a range of a high strength, ultramarine dispersions that have been developed specifically to cope with the high demands of the printing industry and are aimed directly at the aqueous flexographic ink market. The range consists of two products, Artizan AF-S, surfactant based allowing freedom of formulation and wide compatibility, and Artizan AF-R, acrylic resin based making it easy to incorporate and excellent to transfer. Table 1 shows the main differences between the two dispersions.Note de contenu : - Vibrant colours

It is important that the ink used in packaging printing is produced from environmentally friendly and sustainable raw materials as well as being suitable for the printing system. The increasing demand in the field of printed packaging and the scarcity of resources to meet this demand have accelerated the search for new sources for inks. For this purpose, inks produced in the laboratory using a modified cellulose-based binder, a commercial acrylic resin and a commercial soybean protein were compared with a commercial ink. As a result of the study, it was determined that the printability properties of the ink obtained by using the modified cellulose-based binder were better than the ink obtained with commercial soybean protein. It was determined that it showed printability properties close to the ink produced with commercial acrylic binders. By using modified cellulose-based water-based flexographic ink instead of other commonly used binders, more environmentally friendly sustainable inks can be produced.
