Tannage Résumé : In this study, the dry heat resistances of the leathers tanned with different agents such as vegetable, glutaraldehyde, zirconium, phosphonium and chromium were investigated. The morphological characterisation of the tanned leathers was performed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) based on the grain surface and cross section of the leather samples. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was employed to analyse the molecular structure of the tanned leathers. The results showed that the tanned leathers have different dry heat resistances measured at 150°C and 200°C for 30 minutes which are not in parallel with their hydrothermal stability values. The study presented has established that because of the covalent bonding with collagen, usage of chromium is an effective tanning system in achieving the highest dry heat resistance. Because of good filling properties the dry heat resistance values for vegetable and zirconium-tanned leathers were found to be better among the other tanning processes. Note de contenu : - Materials

Tannage Résumé : With the expansion of market demand for chrome-free leathers, much attention has been paid to the safety in using them. Four kinds of chrome-free upper leathers made by Vegetable-Glutaraldehyde (Veg-GA), Glutaraldehyde-Vegetable (GA-Veg), Vegetable-Aluminium (Veg-AI) and a synthetic agent were subjected to accelerated ageing by hot air, UV light and Xe lamp respectively for 96 hours. The physical qualities and chemical indicators of these leathers before and after ageing, such as the shrinkage temperature (Ts), tensile strength, tear strength, colour difference, water vapour permeability, formaldehyde, phenol and aniline were tested. It was shown that some common rules apply to the four kinds of chrome-free upper leather samples after ageing, Xe-lamp ageing has made the tear strength, formaldehyde and phenol levels reduce the most and the aniline level increased the most. UV-light ageing has caused the maximum colour difference change whist hot-air ageing has caused the maximum Ts decrease. All of the ageing methods have enhanced the water vapour permeability. Summarising, leather samples made differently have different physical quality indicators after the same ageing treatment. As the basis of the leather quality change, it is found that the leather fibre turns into a bundle, curled, loose and distorted no matter what kind of ageing treatment is used. Tannage Résumé : We have investigated the influence of tanning agents on grafting butyl acrylate onto the low value lower split of limed hide. The results obtained indicate that the level of grafting increases in the order Al > Cr >Al+Cr. This is ascribed to the presence of a greater number of free sites in hide tanned with Al.
We also note that initiator [I] and monomer [M] concentration play an important role on the grafting level, time and temperature of reaction also have an effect. Increasing [I] and [M] concentrations increases the grafting level up to a certain concentration for each one, after which the rate of grafting tends to level off. This can be attributed to the increase in free radicals which leads to an increase in grafting levels up to the point where homopolymerization exceeds the rate of grafting so the reaction stops. The grafting process was proved via FT-IR.Note de contenu :

Wet-white (tannage)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : This paper focuses on the effect of masking agents and tanning with zinc and zinc-titanium metal complexes. Sodium formate, sodium acetate, sodium citrate and sodium tartrate were used as masking agents. The best masking condition was chosen corresponding to the highest shrinkage temperature. Zinc sulfate and titanium sulfate, in different concentrations, were chosen as tanning agents in mixed-tanning experiments. The highest shrinkage temperature of the wet-white was 77°C, and the attendant zinc content in its leather was 3.63%. After retannage with chrome powder, the shrinkage temperature of the resultant leather increased as expected, and reached 96°C. The wet-white was successfully split which tend to the use of non-chrome pre-tanning, the finished leather was able to meet the requirements.

The results indicated that NaCI dehydrated collagen molecules and thus induced collagen to assemble into fibres. This fibre assembly led to the close approach of collagens into fibres and generated wide spaces between collagen fibres. Accordingly, the presence of NaCI could promote the penetration of tanning agents and favour the tanning reaction. Importantly, the dehydration and fibre-forming functions of NaCI resulted in a porous and orderly fibrous microstructure of collagens, which might contribute to the satisfactory mechanical and aesthetic properties of leathers. This underlying action mechanism of NaCI revealed in this research might be useful for us to optimize traditional pickling and tanning techniques and develop practical salt free or low-salt pickling and tanning techniques.
