Textiles et tissus à usages techniques -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The demand for small-diameter blood vessel substitutes has been increasing due to a shortage of autograft vessels and problems with thrombosis and intimal hyperplasia with synthetic grafts. In this study, hybrid small-diameter vascular grafts made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and silk fibroin, which possessed a hybrid fibrous structure of an aligned inner layer and a random outer layer, were fabricated by the electrospinning technique using a customized striated collector that generated both aligned and random fibers simultaneously. A methanol post-treatment process induced the transition of fibroin protein conformation from the water-soluble, amorphous, and less ordered structures to the water-insoluble ?-sheet structures that possessed robust mechanical properties and relatively slow proteolytic degradation. The methanol post-treatment also created crimped fibers that mimicked the wavy structure of collagen fibers in natural blood vessels. Ultrafine nanofibers and nanowebs were found on the electrospun TPU/fibroin samples, which effectively increased the surface area for cell adhesion and migration. Cyclic circumferential tensile test results showed compatible mechanical properties for grafts made of a soft TPU/fibroin blend compared to human coronary arteries. In addition, cell culture tests with endothelial cells after 6 and 60 days of culture exhibited high cell viability and good biocompatibility of TPU/fibroin grafts, suggesting the potential of applying electrospun TPU/fibroin grafts in vascular tissue engineering. Technologie médicaleIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Radiation curing equipment is beginning to enjoy a period of development. The author looks at what strides are being taken.
One of the most important demands made by users of radiation curing is the availability and reliability of equipment. The area of aquipment includes issues of running costs and ease of introduction or retro-fitting to existing coating lines.
A great step forward in electron beam curing has been the introduction of more affordable equipement, which runs at a lower accelerating voltage than earlier commercial e.b.units (J Chrusciel, Proceedings RadTech Europe Basel, 2001, 367-373). Equipment that has a lower accelerating voltage tends to benefit from greater reliability. this is because of the longer life of both the metal foil windows and the electrongun filaments. The extent to which electrons will penetrate coatings is related to the accelerating voltage and the thickness of the coating.
Penetration of thick coatings is achievable with quite modest voltages (for a 25 mm thick coating only 110 kVolts is required). Because e.b. curing is carried out under a nitrogen blanket, oxygen inhibition is not a problem, and for radical curing processes an initiator does not have to be used.
As a result, the cure occurs at ambient or slightly higher temperatures (dependent upon the thickness of the coating and the thermal conductivity of the substrate). The lack of a photoinitiator in a formulation means that the cured formulations do not contain migratable species originating from the this source.Note de contenu : - Packaging issues

Technologie médicaleIndex. décimale : 681.51 Electronique et informatique industrielle, capteur Résumé : This paper presents the proposal and characterisation of a flexible, shockproof, vibration-free, longitudinal and transversal compressive displacement sensor based on a composite of CI Disperse Orange 25 and carbon nanotubes created with an energy-free, drop-casting technique. The structural morphology of each layer is studied briefly through X-ray diffraction. Electric investigations of the sensors in the form of impedance were performed as a function of longitudinal and transversal compressive displacement at three different frequencies. The compressive displacements were measured from 0 to 250 µm at three fixed frequencies (ie, 1, 10 and 200 kHz). The impedance has an inverse relationship with longitudinal compressive displacement but a direct relationship with transversal compressive displacement. The frequency to impedance relationship is inverse with the sensitivity of the impedance as a function of longitudinal displacement. Because of their small size, light weight and simple fabrication technique and design, as well as their low cost and maintenance, these types of devices can be utilised across a wide range of medical applications, such as in rehabilitation centres, for machine status assessment during physiotherapy, and in robotic body parts, as well as for educational purposes in universities. Technologie médicaleIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : The medical technology industry is growing faster than other industries and is currently experiencing a real change: More and more innovative products are being developed to help patients and relieve the burden on the healthcare system in the long term. The biggest hurdie is that medical devices can only be brought onto the market once they have complied with all regulatory standards and then, at best, be manufactured fully automatically, since manual handling is the most cost intensive.
