Those studies showed major differences in gel properties as a function of the specific carbodiimide. In this continuing study, the gelable products formed from gelatin or a gelatin/chitosan blend modified with EDC or pCDIs were cast into films. The mechanical properties, hydrothermal stability, solubility, and water absorptivity of the films were examined. The range of values for mechanical properties (tensile strength, % elongation at break, Young’s modulus, and toughness) was small enough that it would likely not be a major consideration in the choice of carbodiimide for a particular application. Neither EDC nor the pCDIs at the concentrations tested in this work had any discernible effect on the hydrothermal stability of gelatin or gelatin/chitosan films. The effects of the pCDIs on solubility and water absorption properties of the films trended more closely with the concentration of the pCDI than did the effects of EDC. This preliminary study explores the potential for using the environmentally friendly, water-dispersible pCDIs in gelatin and gelatin/chitosan-based films for use in leather coating or packaging applications. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The tanning characteristics of starch samples modified by different methods were investigated in our previous studies. In this study, utilization of modified starch in leather making as a retanning agent and its effect on dyeing process have been investigated. For this purpose, the molecular size of native corn starch was reduced by H2O2 oxidation and then carboxymethylated. A series of analyses (water solubility, degree of substitution, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Proton and Carbon Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy) were carried out for characterization. Then, carboxymethyl starches were used in retanning processes to be 3, 5 and 10% based on leather weight and the shrinkage temperatures and filling coefficients of the leathers were determined. Acid and metal complex dyestuffs were used in dyeing processes and the effect of carboxymethyl starch on dyeing was also investigated by examining dye consumption, dry and wet rubbing fastness and color of the leathers. From the results it was concluded that carboxymethyl starch showed a noticeable solo performance in terms of filling property and shrinking temperature without any considerable adverse effect on dyeing. Titre : Studies on the use of bi-functional enzyme for leather making Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Gladstone Christopher Jayakumar, Auteur ; Murali Sathish, Auteur ; Rathinam Aravindhan, Auteur ; Jonnalagadda Raghava Rao, Auteur Année de publication : 2016 Article en page(s) : p. 455-460 Note générale : Bibliogr.

This results in the generation of significant quantity of solid and liquid wastes, which is of major concern for the leather fraternity. However, several alternate technologies are available to address this issue. One of the well explored systems is application of enzymes in conventional leather processing. In the present research, application of bi-functional enzyme-fibrozyme (mixture of protease and amylase) for leather processing was studied. The present study relies upon the characteristic evaluation methods to ascertain the efficiency of enzymes in unhairing and fiber opening. Initially, various concentrations of enzymes were applied to coin hides by drum method. In this approach, 3.5% of fibrozyme is optimized for efficient removal of hair and proteoglycans. This is based on the organoleptic evaluation of enzyme treated pelts. The efficiency of enzyme was primarily evaluated th rough staining technique. Moreover, physical strength parameters were measured to assess the impact on fibers due to enzyme treatment. Morphological evaluation was carried out to confirm that there is no coalescent or distortion of fibers after enzyme treatment. Hydrothermal stability of experimental wet blue leather was found to be 108°C, which confirms better exhaustion and fixation of chromium. The study provides an avenue for integrated enzymatic dehairing and fiber opening using a single formulation of protease and amylase.

Tannage Résumé : A nano-precursor which can, in situ, produce nano-SiO2 under particular triggering conditions was introduced into leather to improve the hydrothermal stability. In order to elucidate the reaction of nano-SiO2 with protein and how it influences the properties of the protein, collagen was used as a model in detailed investigations. The result from FTIR indicated that two new chemical bondings occurred during the formation of the organic/inorganic nano-hybrid. One appears to be the reaction between nano-SiO2 formed in-situ by the hydrolysis of tetraethoxy silane and the —C=N— groups of arginine, histidine and tryptophane on the collagen backbone. In a second bonding, occurring at the same time as the condensation reaction of silanol proceeds, the pendent hydroxyl groups of collagen may partly react with Si—OH and form a strong interreaction between the organic and inorganic phases. These two chemical bonds seem to contribute to the leather’s high hydrothermal stability. AFM (atomic force microscopy) was used to determine the size and scale of nano-SiO2 particles in the protein. The size distribution is approx. 50 - 80 nm and there appeared to be no agglutination. When the bated pelt is treated with 0.2% or 0.3 wt% nano-SiO2 (based on bated pelt weight) the shrinkage temperature is raised from 68°C to 86.9°C and 95.4°C respectively -nano-SiO2 is thus shown to be a viable tannage.
