Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Glycolysis of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flakes obtained from grinding postconsumer bottles was carried out at 180–190°C, and molar ratios of PET/EG were taken as 1/6. Reaction product was extracted by hot water, and water soluble crystallizable fraction and water insoluble fraction were obtained. These fractions were characterized by hydroxyl value determination. Water soluble crystallizable fraction obtained from glycolysis product was used for synthesis of PET-based epoxy resin. Two epoxy-based paints were prepared using different amounts of PET-based epoxy resin. Wet paint properties, and chemical and physical film properties of paints containing waste PET were determined. Increasing the rate of PET-based epoxy resin in paint formulation did not have a negative effect on the wet paint properties and dry film properties of epoxy-based paints containing waste PET. Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : With continuous depletion of petrochemical feedstock and their rising prices, the chemical industry is now looking for alternative renewable and sustainable materials. Such materials could be processed with various chemistries to produce high performance functional materials for a range of applications, such as plastics, coatings, constructions, pharmaceuticals, and food applications. Cardanol derived from cashew nut shell liquid has a reactive phenolic group and aliphatic double bond that could be exploited to produce novel functional materials for polymer and coating applications. It has previously been used for preparation of phenolics, epoxy, and phenalkamine hardeners. In this study, we report on the preparation of novel epoxy resin from cardanol via simple a two-step reaction. The prepared resin with epoxy equivalent weight of 210–220 gm/eq was analyzed using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The epoxy resin was then used as binder along with bisphenol-A-based epoxy resin (DGEBPA) at various weight proportions and cured with different amine hardeners. The cured coatings were analyzed for physical, mechanical, and chemical properties for optimization of the coating formulation. The study conducted showed that 40–60% of DGEBPA resulted in comparable properties to that of completely DGEBPA-based system. Further, thermal and anticorrosive properties of the optimized coatings were also evaluated. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Methods - Substrate pretreatment - Coating application

Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Over the past 20 years, the U.S. Navy has implemented the use of advanced ultra-high-solids (UHS) coatings for the protection of ship tanks and voids to extend the life of tank coatings. In areas of breakdown, the maintenance community needs a suitable touch-up and repair coating and as part of this ongoing effort, the Navy sought methods to improve basic coating test methods to better assess repair coating performance. This article describes this testing, the goal of which is to project greater than 10 years of service life. Note de contenu : - Fig. 1 : Initial coating deterioration at weld beads and edges

Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The aim of this study was to produce graphene oxide (GO) coatings on biodegradable AZ31B magnesium (Mg) alloy. GO was synthesized by improved Hummers’ method, and a suspension was prepared in deionized water by ultrasonication. GO coatings were developed on AZ31B Mg alloy by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The EPD parameters, such as voltage and time, were optimized to obtain uniform GO coatings. Characterization was carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy. GO was found to have a thickness of approximately 0.7–1 nm as determined by AFM. Electrochemical behavior of coatings was evaluated by Tafel analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in Ringer’s lactate solution. GO coatings improved the corrosion resistance of the AZ31B Mg alloy by 16× in Ringer’s lactate solution as compared to bare Mg alloy.
