Tungstate and vanadate-doped polypyrrole/aluminum flake composite coatings for the corrosion protection of aluminum 2024-T3 / Niteen G. Jadhav in JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH, Vol. 12, N° 2 (03/2015)
[article]
Titre : Tungstate and vanadate-doped polypyrrole/aluminum flake composite coatings for the corrosion protection of aluminum 2024-T3 Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Niteen G. Jadhav, Auteur ; Mark B. Jensen, Auteur ; Victoria J. Gelling, Auteur Année de publication : 2015 Article en page(s) : p. 259-276 Note générale : Bibliogr.

This resulted in the deposition of PPy on the surface of the Al flakes leading to the formation of doped PPy/Al flake composite pigments. These composite pigments were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, conductive-atomic force microscopy, four-point probe conductivity, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, these composites were incorporated in an epoxy-amide binder system in order to formulate a primer for an aluminum 2024-T3 substrate. The coatings were exposed to the Prohesion test conditions and corrosion resistance properties were monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, DC polarization, galvanic coupling, and scanning electrochemical microscopy measurements. It was found that the doped PPy/Al flake coatings provided sacrificial protection to the underlying aluminum 2024-T3 substrate. Additionally, the release of dopants from PPy backbone resulted in the passivation in the defect areas improving the corrosion protection ability. Till now we were using only corrosion inhibiting pigments like MIO, Zinc Chromate/ Phosphate etc. As we want to prevent corrosion here we are using Glass Flakes which are acid and alkali proof and low at cost. Therefore, it gives excellent protection on corrosion. Note de contenu : This is a very revolutionary idea as GLASS FLAKES used as barrier for Water Vapors.

Whether cranes, bridges, offshore or marine - whenever steel needs to be protected from corrosion and weather stable coatings with long lasting appearance are required, polyurethane topcoats are the preferred solution. In this paper, the weathering performance of two-component polyurethane topcoats used in corrosion protection applications, e.g. bridges, marine, stadia, etc., is discussed with emphasis on some key formulating variables. Variables such as isocyanate index and resin selection are compared in an accelerated weathering study using various polyurethane topcoats. The results are referenced to SSPC polyurethane coatings specifications which are often in the industry to define performance criteria. A zinc-free anticorrosion pigment based on organically treated calcium strontium phosphosilicate with a very fine particle size has been developed on this purpose. This pigment was found to show much better anticorrosive properties than standard zinc phosphate in salt spray tests. Note de contenu : - The value of experimental design
