Since the Industrial Revolution, air pollution has been a common daily experience for most people living in cities and for many people living with smokers or near power plants and factories. Much of the reforms of the environmental movement beginning in the 1960s and 1970s focused on cleaning up and preventing air pollution - smoke, smog, particulates, petroleum distillates, car and truck exhausts and brake dusts etc. - at their sources.
These efforts greatly reduced people’s exposures to air pollution and therefore to ongoing risk for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases including lung cancer, while also reducing ecological impacts like acid rain harming fish and frogs in watersheds downstream from polluted cities. However, the negative health impacts of air pollution (indoor and outdoor) still is the fifth largest contributor to mortality worldwide and over 90% of people globally are impacted by air pollution.
Progress has been made. In the 50 years between 1970 and 2020 in the United States, lung cancer more than halved from the #3 cause of death at 78 per 100,000 (men), to less than 32 per 100,000 of (both sexes). Despite real human health and environmental wins resulting from controlling and reducing air pollution, however, much less attention has been given to the impacts of air pollution on the largest organ in our bodies : the skin.
This article summarizes recent research on the pro-inflammatory effects of common air pollution on human skin and then proposes certain natural skin care and dietary protocols using plant-based omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids to help protect the skin from accelerated harmful effects.Note de contenu : - The skin's role in air pollution protection

Les terpènes se rencontrent également chez les Metazoas (phéromones et hormones sesquiterpéniques des Hexapodas, diterpènes d'organismes aquatiques (Cnidarias, Poriferas).Index. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Highly concentrated shea butter triterpene esters are shown to be promising new bioactives for protecting the skin against environmental stress conditions and reactive oxygen species. Shea butter triterpene esters, comprising cinnamic and acetic acid esters of lupeol and butyrospermol, demonstrate potent protease inhibiting and anti-inflammatory properties. These are properties of high value for caring cosmetics offering protection against premature skin ageing and treatment of mature skin. Note de contenu : - Environmental stress and the human skin

Hexapeptides
Protection cutanéeIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Cutaneous pigmentation by melamins represents the main pathway to protect skin cells against the carcinogenic and ageing effects resulting from UV exposure. α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) induces epidermal pigmentation upon binding to the melanocortin-1 receptor, which in turn activates the signal transduction pathway taht leads to the induction of tyrosinase and other key players for melanin synthesis. In addition, it has been proven that α-MSH directly reduces UV-induced DNA damage and enhances DNA repair in epidermal melanocytes and keratinocytes by modulating the function of DNA repair molecules.
Therefore, there has been increasing interest from skincare companies in developing α-MSH analogs that induce sunless tanning, with a particular emphasis on small peptide analogues for their ability to activate the melanocortin-1 receptor, reduce UV-induced DNA damage and easili penetrate across the stratum corneum after topical application. In this study we demonstrate that acetyl hexapeptide-1, a biomimetic peptide analogue of α-MSH, reduces the genotoxic adverse effects of both UVA and UVB in epidermal melanocytes, and that it protects human epidermal keratinocytes from DNA oxidative damages induced by UVA. Furthemore, using an ex vivo skin model, we show that acetyl hexapeptide-1 significantly reduces the appearance of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers after UV challenge and that it blocks UV-induced caspase-3 activation and apoptosis.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Cell and tissue culture - Comet assay - Detection of 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG) - Immunohistochemical detection of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and caspase-3 - Image quantification by picture analysis - Evaluation of the anti-erythemal properties of acetyl hexapeptide-1 in human volunteers

Protection cutanéeIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Discomfort, fragility, dehydration, scaliness and redness are all characteristics of sensitive skin that is lacking an effective defense system. Individuals living in urban environments are more prone to suffer from skin sensitivity, suggesting a relationship between low exposure to nature and inflammatory disorders. The link between nature and skin health involves the skin microbiota, which has been found to be different in uncontacted populations with healthier and more protected skin. FensebiomeTM peptide helped promote a healthy microbiome similar to that of our ancestors in doser contact with nature and to reinforce the physical barrier function by improving the cell cohesion and the skin barrier protective effect on urban subjects, helping restore sensitive skin.
