Three different concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (0%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) were evaluated. The nanoparticles were characterized by means of the transmission electron microscopy and an X-ray diffractometer. The varnish prepared was evaluated for its viscosity, adhesion of the film to the wood, water absorption, and the effects of natural weathering on the color and quality of the varnish. It was found that viscosity decreases as the concentration of TiO2 nanoparticles increases, while no variation was found in the thickness of the film. Except for Gmelina arborea and Tectona grandis, the adhesion was not statistically affected. It was found that, in the 9 species tested, incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles decreased the values of water absorption. The evaluation of natural weathering showed that the varnish with no added TiO2 nanoparticles degraded completely after 1 year of weathering exposure, while the modified varnish film endured. Less color change was observed in lumber treated with the varnish containing TiO2 nanoparticles. The best performance of the varnish in the nine tropical woods used was observed when TiO2 nanoparticles were added at 1.5% concentration. Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, zinc aluminum hydrotalcite intercalated with 2-benzothiazolylthio-succinic acid (BTSA) as a container of corrosion inhibitor was prepared and incorporated in an epoxy coating. The HT-BTSA obtained was characterized using infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. BTSA release from HT-BTSA in 0.5 M NaCl solution was investigated using UV–Vis spectroscopy. The corrosion protection performance of the epoxy coating containing HT-BTSA was evaluated and compared to the pure epoxy coating and the epoxy coating containing HT by cathodic disbonding test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, salt spray test, and adhesion measurement. It was shown that the BTSA was intercalated in hydrotalcite and its loading was about 33.5%. The BTSA release from HT-BTSA increased with the pH of the NaCl solution. It was also shown that the presence of HT or HT-BTSA in epoxy coating improved the resistance to cathodic disbonding and the adhesion of the epoxy coating. Corrosion protection performance of epoxy coating containing HT-BTSA was higher than that of epoxy coating containing HT. Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Zn–Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) intercalated with various corrosion inhibitors namely vanadate (E1), 2-mercapto benzothiazole (E3), molybdate (E7), phytic acid (E8) and 8-hydroxyquinoline (E9) was dispersed in a hybrid sol–gel silica matrix sol. Bilayer coatings with configurations E3|E1, E7|E1, E8|E1 and E9|E1 were generated on aluminum alloy AA 2024-T3 substrates using the inhibitor intercalated LDH modified sols by dip coating technique followed by UV curing and thermal curing at 80°C for 1 h in air. Corrosion resistance of coatings deposited from matrix sol with and without inhibitor intercalated LDH was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization after exposure to 3.5% NaCl and salt spray tests, results of which were compared with those of uncoated and chromated substrates. A non-chromated primer was applied on the sol–gel coated substrates. Adhesion of the coatings to the substrate and to the primer was evaluated by peel-off tape test and found to be rank 5. The sol–gel coated substrates did not exhibit corrosion during salt spray tests. Electrochemical tests showed that all the sol–gel coated substrates exhibited superior corrosion resistance when compared to bare and chromated substrates. More specifically, coatings generated using the corrosion inhibitors phytic acid and 8-hydroxy quinoline intercalated Zn–Al LDH were seen to render maximum corrosion protection, exhibiting two orders of magnitude lower corrosion currents than bare substrates and one order lower corrosion current than chromated substrate, after 120-h exposure to 3.5% NaCl solution.
