The critical ratio (rOH)c is such critical excess of OH groups at which the critical conversion of NCO at the gel point groups reaches 100%. The dilution effect was interpreted by pronounced cyclization, which was higher in the case of the HDI-trimer compared with the HDI. Of a few ways to obtain better performing polymeric binders, alloying the incompatible polymers through compatibilization is fast-emerging with a number of promises. Interpenetrating polymer networks are one of its kinds. In this study, two polymer alloys of Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) based on epoxy-acrylic-polyurethane polymers have been developed in the laboratory and subjected to different laboratory accelerated tests as pigmented coatings. They have been found to possess far superior physical and chemical and corrosion resistance properties compared to crosslinked acrylates, polyamide cured epoxies and polyurethanes. The IPNs as clear coatings were also characterized by various physico-chemical and surface analytical techniques. The thermo-analytical techniques, FTIR and SEM confirmed the formation of IPN. The improved corrosion resistance properties were established by water permeation tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Note de contenu : - Synthesis of epoxy-acrylate precursors

Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Though blending polymers to obtain high performance materials is an old practice, the new trend in such an approach is the emergence of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) as binders for protective coatings with improved properties. In this study, one ambient curing IPN-type polymer alloy developed out of epoxy and acrylic polyurethane systems as a high performing binder was formulated into paints and evaluated in comparison with the currently used conventional epoxy polyamide and polyurethane systems. A three-coat system consisting of a zinc phosphate primer, a micaceous iron oxide (MIO) undercoat, and a topcoat was formulated out of the IPN along with a similar system of epoxy primer, epoxy undercoat, and a PU topcoat. A two-coat system of the same primer with an IPN clear topcoat and a similar system with epoxy has also been studied. All the systems were studied under accelerated laboratory tests and field tests at a corrosive location. The results are reported and conclusions are drawn in this article.
