This study investigated the tensile, microstructural and moisture absorption properties of plantain peel reinforced polystyrene composites. The filler composition was varied between 0 wt% and 40 wt% and all analyses were done as per ASTM standards. The force at break and Young's modulus increased with increasing filler content and had maximum values of 405 N and 380 MPa respectively. The elongation at break point of plantain peel powder reinforced bio-composite reduced with increase in filler content, indicating that the biomass fillers led to a reduction in the deformability of the composites due to a poor transfer of stress at the weak fiber-plastic interphase. It was furthermore observed that composites with higher filler content were more susceptible to moisture diffusivity due to the hydrophilic nature of the filler powder. Microstructural analysis revealed that a more uniform distribution of the plantain fiber occurs at 40% fiber content compared to those of higher filler content.

We investigated (1) the water absorption behavior of the coatings, (2) the effect of water absorption on the mechanical property of the coatings, and (3) the relationship between the water-absorbing properties and adhesive performance under accelerated aging conditions. It was found that the water absorption of the coatings indicated Fickian diffusion, and the saturated water content M ∞ and diffusion coefficient D of the coatings were quantitatively determined. The storage modulus E′ of the coatings decreased due to water absorption. However, in the coating that exhibited higher crosslink density, the effect of water absorption on the decrease in E′ was relatively small in spite of its higher M ∞ . The lower M ∞ and higher D coating resulted in better adhesive performance than the higher M ∞ and lower D coating. Thus, M ∞ value affected adhesive performance under accelerated aging conditions much more than D value. Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A primary cause of coating failure is diffusion of water through organic coatings during which many corrosive species are transported to the metal-coating interface. However, water vapor permeability through the coating improves blister resistance to a certain extent. The present work describes the influence of chemical nature of the polymer on the above two properties. Attempts were also made to establish a correlation between these two properties for pigmented organic coating. Six paints were formulated and processed using six different types of binders at a constant pigment volume concentration (PVC) and specific gravity. Water ingress, water vapor permeability, and water absorption of these coatings were estimated using electrochemical impedance measurements (EIS), permeability cup method, and gravimetric method, respectively. There exists a good linear correlation between water uptake measured by EIS and water absorption measured by gravimetry. Similarly, a correlation was also noticed between water uptake by EIS and water vapor permeability. However, polyurethane type polymers did not fit into this linear correlation. Furthermore, influence of the resin chemistry on anticorrosive properties of these coatings was also studied using EIS and salt spray exposure test. Among all polymers under investigation, acrylic polyol-based polyurethane has shown the lowest water uptake, higher impedance, better salt spray resistance but higher water vapor transmission rate.
Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Absorption and desorption isotherms for water vapour in full chrome leather at 5, 20 and 35°c are given. They agree satisfactorily with those previously found by the author and by Kanagy, but uptakes are higher than obtained by most other investigators, probably because they allowed insufficient time for complete equilibrium. The moisture content at 65% r.h. is far higher than usually assumed in leather analysis. At high humidities, regains exceed 70 %.
Although the outline of the hysteresis cycle was measured by slow approach to equilibrium (years), this period was only necessary because of slow diffusion of moisture through air; the equilibrium values obtained by rapid equilibration in a vacuum are little different. At humidities up to about 60%, the shape of the ascending humidity isotherm is different if the specimens are heated to 100°c beforehand. The descending branch is little changed.
The usual hysteresis cycle defines an area which is crossed by isotherms descending from points on the rising boundary curve, or ascending from points on the descending boundary curve. A number of these isotherms are shown.
Data are given for absorption and desorption at 20°c, 65 % r.h. of leathers with different chrome contents. The width of the hysteresis cycle under these conditions increases with chrome content, probably because crosslinking by chromium reduces swelling during absorption, and reduces shrinking during desorption.Note de contenu : - Leathers used for the experiments
