The test samples were treated with three coating systems (white and brown pigmented acrylate waterborne coatings systems with different layering) from six producers. The artificial weathering was carried out based on standardized (504 h) and increased weathering parameters (504 h). Thirty cycles of temperature changes were performed. Discoloration suggesting the rate of degradation process and color stability was measured by a spectrophotometer in L*a*b* color space. The results showed greater color stability of white coating systems during both experiments. The producer of acrylate coatings with iodopropynyl butyl carbamate and permethrin as biocides and benzotriazole, silicon dioxide and methylsiloxane as additives was characterized by the best coatings performance. The most sensitive color parameter to describe the surface quality as a result of irradiation and water spray has proven to be a change of lightness. A tendency towards degradation with increasing lightness was observed during weathering. The effect of temperature itself on color change was minimal. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy revealed microscopic changes of coatings caused by artificial weathering. Silanes organofonctionnelsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A method of treating timber before applying a coating has been developed and tested. An organofunctional silane coupling compound was found that was capable of reacting and forming bonds with both wood and a range of coatings. Wet and dry adhesion strength between a range of coatings and wood has been determined by the direct pull-off test under a variety of test conditions. The data presented show how the bridging of the interface between wood and coating can, with some coatings, improve not only the initial bond strength but also provide significantly higher wet adhesion strength and long-term bond durability. Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Many earlier studies have shown a general relation between the surface properties of wood and coating performance. However, because of the multitude of chemical and physical interactions, and the effect of the surface structure on its wettability as well as on the penetration, the adhesion and durability of a coating may be different depending on the specific combination of wood species and coating materials. Important analogous findings are also knwons from wood bonding. Note de contenu : - Finishing options examined

TaninsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The natural exposure and water absorption tests carried out within European Standard EN927 use clear, knot-free wood in order to minimise variability in the results. However, knots are common in practice in many coated timber components, and it is widely acknowledged that the performance of paints can be compromised over knots or timbers that possess a high tannin content. As part of the European Standard for evaluating the performance of coatings on wood, a validated method is required for evaluating the discoloration due to tannin staining and resin exudation from knots. CEN/TC139 Working Group 2 has been charged with identifying a reliable method of testing for tannin stain resistance and producing a standard; identified as EN927-7 'Resistance to tannin staining'. This paper presents results from two laboratories on an evaluation of a Trätek standard procedure. Results of discoloration are presented for panels containing knots that have been coated with one of two test coatings. Reflectance spectrometry and digital imaging-based methods of evaluating discoloration were used and an interpretation of the comparability of the techniques is provided. The suitability of the method for promoting to WG2 as a standard is presented on the basis of these results. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : QUV with spray - QUV without spray - Window exposure
