In many cases, regulation constraints have led to reconsider bath technologies and products but certainly not performances.
Coatings particularly is one field in which high performance is required since the function of a coating, outside of the aesthetics, is mainly to protect the substrate it is applied on. Polyurethane coatings, especially two components systems, are very appreciated for their outstanding performances, especially durability and outdoor weatherability. When health and environmental preoccupations started to be at the forefront, 2K polyurethane waterborne coatings became naturally a route to follow, especially to reduce Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in the formulations.
The challenge was above all to design waterborne formulations containing polyisocyanates which would be stable, regarding the reaction with water. Such a formulation should provide enough time to enable application and film formation with good end properties. Hydrophilic polyisocyanates were the answer and many synthesis routes were tried, each one having of course, advantages and drawbacks.
In this paper, we will present a study aiming to highlight differences regarding the nature of the hydrophilic polyisocyanates. Latest developments of Vencorex in this field will be also included.Note de contenu : - POLYISOCYANATE : HOW TO MAKE IT HYDROPHILIC ?

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : High-solid two-pack paint formulations based on hyperbranched alkyd polyol (HBA) and isocyanate curing agents were developed for high performance exterior coating application. The base component consists of a hyperbranched alkyd polyol (HBA) resin and a mixture of pigments like titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide, carbon black and talc. The pigments were dispersed in the HBA resin using a ball milI for a period of 6 - 7 h. The base component is then cured separatly with two different types of isocyanate curing agents such as aliphatic isocyanate (Desmodur N3390) and cycloaliphatic isocyanate (Desmodur Z4470). These experimental paint compositions were applied on mild steel specimens coated with epoxy red oxide primer (two coats of primer and two coats of exterior grey paint). The coating systems were evaluated for adhesion, tensile, corrosion and weathering resistance properties. For comparison, specimens of the conventional (silicone alkyd) paint was also prepared and tested. Results indicate that the developed coating composition have superior mechanical, corrosion resistance and weathering resistance properties compared to the conventional silicone alkyd coating.

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Biobased materials are increasingly important in the coatings industry as more companies align their sustainability goals to reduce environmental footprints and develop more eco-friendly products to meet customer needs. However, widespread adoption of biobased materials in coating applications can be challenging due to the lack of available biobased materials that are both cost-effective and performance competitive.
To solve these challenges, we developed a series of cost-competitive biobased epoxy resins using distilled tall oil (DTO) as the feedstock. DTO, a bio-refinery product derived from crude tall oil, is a byproduct of the pinewood pulping process and is 100% biobased. DTO is a mixture of tall oil fatty acids (TOFA)—mainly oleic acid and linoleic acid—and tall oil rosin acids (rosin)—mainly abietic acid and its isomers. Figure 1 shows the molecular structures of the main components in DTO.
The properties of these novel DTO-based epoxy resins can be tuned by changing the ratio of TOFA to rosin in DTO. The three DTO-based epoxy resins listed in Table 1 are amber color liquids at room temperature, have a biocontent range of 40% to 50% and an epoxy equivalent weight (EEW) ranging from 500 to 700 g/eq. They are designed for use in applications such as coatings, composites and adhesives, and performance enhancement(s) can be achieved with proper formulation. This article will demonstrate how these novel DTO-based epoxy resins can help improve miscibility and compatibility, water resistance, adhesion, flexibility, impact resistance, and chemical resistance in 2K epoxy coatings.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL SECTION : Coating model formulations - Characterization

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Recently, two-component (2K) Michael Addition-based coating systems providing fast drying at room temperature in combination with tunable open time and very long pot life have entered the market. Adhesion robustness over a variety of substrates is an important point of attention for such fast drying and inherently rather apolar coating systems. Here, we present a study that resulted in new malonated polyester resins facilitating a significantly improved adhesion performance of the Michael Addition-based coatings, especially over epoxy-amine and polyurethane primer substrates. Notably, the introduction of hydroxyl groups is an effective way to improve properties such as wet adhesion.
