Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, crack free, well-adhered and transparent zein coatings were obtained on 316L stainless steel substrates by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) employing varying deposition voltages and times. Obtained films were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and it was shown that the obtained coatings exhibit homogeneous and smooth surfaces. The deposition yield was investigated at various EPD conditions; the highest yield was found at 10 V and 10 min deposition time. The deposition mechanism was discussed by considering chemical reactions occurring during EPD. The EPD method developed here is attractive for the surface modification of metal implants by zein layers aiming at functionalizing surfaces for biomedical applications.

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Non-fluorinated coatings have recently emerged as a new approach to avoid contamination on transparent surfaces. This research work concerns the synthesis of highly transparent, hydrophobic, durable, and self-cleaning coatings as an alternative to fluorine-based coatings used on glass. The developed coating is produced by a chemical route (sol–gel method) using two silica-based precursors, hexamethyldisilazane, and tetraethoxysilane (HMDS/TEOS). Then, the prepared Gel HMDS/TEOS was deposited on glass slides by the dip-coating technique. Afterward, the effects of mechanical durability, water-drop testing, thermal cycling testing, and aging times on the hydrophobicity of the gel were analyzed. The properties of the coating were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV–VIS-NIR spectrophotometry, and contact angle measurement. The results show that the organic modification of the gel by trimethylsilyl (–Si–(CH3)3) groups leads to a homogeneous and a hydrophobic surface. Sufficient dilution of this gel with ethanol has been found to provide a highly transparent coating without losing its hydrophobic property. In addition, the robust and durable coating exhibits high self-cleaning performance suitable for various industrial applications.

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of novel layered double hydroxide (LDH)-modified phosphate esters (LPPBs) flame retardants were synthesized by the reaction of flexible phosphate ester (PPB) and LDHs with different mass ratio and then well characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). The obtained LPPBs were mixed with melamine formaldehyde resin to produce transparent fire-retardant coatings applied on wood substrates. The coatings containing LDHs exhibit a high degree of transparency even at high LDH contents due to the well dispersed and completely exfoliated state of LDHs in the amino matrix, as determined from the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The fire protection tests show that the values of weight loss, char index, and flame spread rating of the coatings are remarkably decreased with the introduction of LDHs concomitant with an increase in the intumescent factor. The cone calorimeter and smoke density tests show that the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of the coatings are significantly improved with the introduction of LDHs due to the formation of a more compact, continuous, and intumescent char during combustion. The results of thermogravimetric (TG) analysis show that the thermal stability and residual weight of the coatings are gradually increased with increasing LDH content. Char residue analysis shows that the introduction of LDHs into the coatings contributes to generating more phosphorus-rich crosslinking structures and aromatic structures in the condensed phase that produce a more compact and thermally stable char against the release of heat and smoke, thus exhibiting excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties.
