Traitement thermiqueIndex. décimale : 677.4 Textiles artificiels Résumé : PTT is an aromatic polyester which is manufactured by the condensation reaction of terephtalic acid and 1,3-propanediol. Some of the commercially available products are Corterra (COS, Texaco), Solotex (Asahi Kasai, Teijin) and Sorona (DuPont). Owing to 3 carbon atoms in diol structure, zig-zag configuration of polymer chain provides inherent elasticity. High stretch, bulk and softness of PTT support to use in sports and fashion applications. Commercially available drawn synthetic filaments have good tenacity and elasticity but they lack in dimensional stability. Therefore heat setting is essential, and is associated with modification in crystalline morphology. Note de contenu : - Load-elongation behavior of as received material

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 677.4 Textiles artificiels Résumé : Heat setting is an essential step in synthetic liber processing to achieve dimensional stability. In the present work an attempt has been made to evaluate the effect of heat setting conditions such as temperature and tension on tensile properties of polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT). Stress during heat setting was found to be an important factor. The findings are useful for setting process conditions of PTT as per end-user applications.

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : We prepared banana fiber (BF)/poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) composites using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as a compatibilizer. BF was treated with NaOH aqueous solution (BF-A). Both BF/PBS/HDI and BF-A/PBS/HDI composites were made by applying a batch type twin-kneader at 130 °C. Dumbbell specimens were prepared by an injection molding machine at 130 °C. Effect of concentration of NaOH aq on tensile strength and impact strength, effect of amount of HDI on tensile strength and Izod impact strength, and effect of mixing time on tensile strength and Izod impact strength of BF/PBS/HDI and BF-A/PBS/HDI composites were studied. When contents of HDI in composites were increased, tensile strength increased. In addition, when mixing times were increased, tensile strength increased. Although the mechanical properties of PBS were first degraded with the addition of BF, alkaline treatment to BF and the addition of HDI improved the mechanical properties. This probably due to the promotion of the adhesion between BF and PBS. The surface morphology of the fracture surfaces of the composites were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It shows that higher mechanical properties can be expected from compatibilized composites based on BF-As with aliphatic polyesters. Alkoxysilane functional alkyds and tung oil-based reactive diluents were synthesized and used as additives in varying amounts in alkyd coatings. Looking at modified alkyd versus modified reactive diluent allows for the comparison of the humidity effect on high and low molecular weight alkoxysilane functional additives. The coatings were cured at 25 and 75% relative humidity and evaluated for drying time, coating and tensile properties, and gel content. It was found that at higher humidity, the alkoxysilane-containing samples improved properties significantly when compared to the control alkyd. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Injection molded composites are becoming more widespread in recent years because of their high quality and low cost. However, compared to synthetic fiber composites, it is difficult to maintain a constant fiber volume fraction and uniform distribution for natural fiber composites during the direct injection process. This is mainly because natural fibers are more easily twisted during feeding into the injection machine, owing to their rough surfaces. These feeding difficulties are particularly due to the low bulk densities of natural fibers, especially natural fillers. Additional challenges to the injection process include the concentration and, especially for natural filler reinforced composite. To address these problems, the current study investigates the mechanical properties and morphologies of polypropylene (PP) reinforced by wood powder. Two pre-molding processes, dry-blending and compounding, were compared, and the effects of an additive (crystalline polyalpha olefin (CPAO)) on the mechanical properties of the wood/PP composites were investigated. This investigation is based on tensile, three point bending, and Izod impact tests, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation of the fracture surfaces. Results indicated that the composites molded through compounding exhibited better mechanical properties than the samples molded through the direct dry-blending process. In addition, the tensile and bending properties of the composites produced through compounding were found to increase with the addition of CPAO content, because of improved wood powder distribution in the PP matrix.
