Crosslinking waterborne coatings with bipodal silanes for improved corrosion protection performance / Jacob D. Shevrin in COATINGS TECH, Vol. 16, N° 4 (04/2019)
[article]

A promising solution to this worldwide regulatory issue is waterborne silane technology, which can offer a heavy metal-free, volatile organic compound (VOC)-free alternative to protecting metals from corrosion. The mechanism behind this corrosion protection can best be explained by the passivation of a metal surface with a waterborne silane film, which acts as a barrier to water, salts, and other corroding materials in the surrounding environment. It is important to note that the waterborne silane technology investigated in this work can be viewed as a type of conversion coating or pretreatment to the metal surface, rather than a conventional waterborne coating or primer. Certain waterborne silane technology requires high-temperature curing procedures for optimal results, which can be difficult to achieve in certain applications or industries. With the use of bipodal silanes, the additional crosslinking introduced into the system can alleviate the need for this high-temperature curing procedure. In this novel work, we demonstrate that the incorporation of a bipodal silane into waterborne silane systems improves the surface passivation of the metal surface, enhances the hydrophobicity of the system, and increases the crosslinking density of the system, leading to significant improvements in the corrosion resistance of waterborne silane technology.

By comparing silicone epoxy containing samples with bisphenol A controls, the effect of siloxane modification on the properties of the materials thus formed were tested. The coatings were formulated to typical automotive primer conditions (in the absence of any pigments) and tested for solvent resistance, lap shear strength, impact resistance, and thermal stability. The formation of IPNs was established by changes in the thermal behavior of the coatings as well as by the synergistic effects noted in the physical and mechanical properties achieved in the formulated coatings. In formation of the silicone modified IPNs, however, it was noted that cure response was diminished versus control. Therefore, we undertook a cure study to determine the effects of catalysts and trifunctional acrylates on the resultant properties in the IPN coatings. This paper describes the chemistries and formulations utilized in attaining the aforementioned properties. The role of Al–Mg pigments dispersed in the resin was studied, too. The high molecular weight of the polysiloxane resin ensures good adhesion to the substrate, low porosity, and high mechanical stability. The good ductility and low steric hindrance of the methyl groups coupled with the chemical inertness of the phenyl groups yields coatings with utmost endurance to aggressive chemicals and, above all, that are suitable as corrosion retardants on sensitive steel substrates. Last, the dispersion in the resin of particles, which act as a corrosion inhibitor, as well as the interposition of organo-silane layers between substrate and polysiloxane resin, can improve further the potential of the designed barrier coatings. Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Acrylic silicon hybrid resins for corrosion protective coatings were developed by emulsion co-polymerisation of methy acrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), styrene with methacryloxypropyl trymethoxysilane (MATS) and octamethylcyclotetra siloxane at 80-85°C in the presence of ammonium per sulphate (APS) as the initiator, resulting polymers were characterised by using Fourier Transformed Infra Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) and particle size analyser. The obtained polymer had high solid content and was used in emulsion paints as binder. The coatings were prepared and their anticorrosion behaviour discussed with varying silicon content. The experimental results show that these polymers supply very useful properties such as high anticorrosive, UV light stability, washing and coating with highest silicon content exhibited the maximum corrosion resistance property. Remarkable improvements in film properties were seen. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Material - Preparation of reagents - Polymerization procedure - Characterization of synthesized polymers

Vernis en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Effective corrosion protection generally requires two or more coats of paint, each with different properties. The development of a waterborne binder system which protects metal with only a single coat is described. The optimised binder system incorporated electronegative functional monomers to improve adhesion and was self-crosslinking. Both clear varnishes and white paint without anticorrosive pigment gave good results over a variety of metallic substrates. Note de contenu : - The quest for waterborne performance
