Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) recently developed novel alkoxysilane-terminated N-substituted urea polymers for use in moisture-curable, single-component (1K) polysiloxane topcoats for military assets. These polymers demonstrate similar mechanical properties and chemical resistance to polyurethanes, yet do not contain harmful isocyanates. The polymers can be synthesized in a variety of polar and aromatic solvents to provide low viscosity solutions, thus allowing for the generation of topcoats that are free of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and contain low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These polymers have been primarily utilized to formulate 1K polysiloxane topcoats for use on the exterior of Navy surface ships and aircraft, yet they are applicable to a variety of non-military markets where exterior durable topcoats are required.
For Navy ships, the 1K polysiloxane topcoat is designed as a haze gray colored system that is <250 g/l VOCs, provides a semi-gloss finish once cured, will adhere to high solids epoxy primers, and offers enhanced weatherability and hydrocarbon resistance compared to legacy Navy topcoats. The coating can be brush- and roll-applied by sailors for touchup/repair applications or spray-applied by contractors during depot-level maintenance. For Navy aircraft, the 1K topcoat is designed as a camouflage gray colored system that is <300 g/l VOCs, is spray-applied via high-volume low-pressure (HVLP) equipment, provides a low-gloss finish once cured, and demonstrates comparable flexibility, weatherability, and hydrocarbon resistance to qualified polyurethane topcoats. Gloss topcoats for Navy aircraft have also been formulated using these novel polymers. Laboratory testing of these 1K polysiloxane topcoats to military specifications (MIL-Specs.) and demonstrations on military assets will be discussed herein.Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Legacy surface ship and aircraft topcoats

While alkyd emulsions generally exhibit very good application characteristics, such as high gloss and good penetration, they lack in performance for weathering resistance. Acrylic dispersions, conversely, are disadvantaged in terms of flow, levelling and appearance, but perform well for outdoor durability. Many attempts have been undertaken to find the balance of performance by hybrid technology approaches. The presented work highlights a novel synthetic approach to oil¬modified acrylic multi-domain dispersions combining acrylic-like outdoor durability with alkyd-like appearance and application properties. Souplesse (mécanique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Vegetable oil modified urethane (OMU) has been widely used in wood flooring applications for many decades. Due to tightening volatile organic compound (VOC) regulations in recent years, the market has been slowly shifting towards waterborne systems. However, most of the current waterborne OMUs either still contain N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), or the VOC is still relatively high at 135–250 g/L, while the nonvolatile (NV) content is relatively low at 32–38% and thus requires multiple coats to achieve performance properties.1 This article demonstrates a recent breakthrough in the development of a novel NMP-free waterborne OMU with a VOC <100 g/L and a high 45% NV content that maintains the exceptional performance properties of traditional solventborne and waterborne OMUs in the market. Its potential applications include but are not limited to high performance clear wood floor coatings, conformal coatings, air dry, and force cure coatings. Note de contenu : - Dry time

Revêtements multicouchesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Temporary peelable coatings (TPCs) protect military equipment surfaces against chemical warfare agents (CWAs) by absorbing liquid contamination, thereby reducing the contact and vapor hazards to personnel. An understanding of the liquid CWA mass-transport mechanisms governing sorption is critical toward optimizing coating properties for reducing these hazards. We applied Nuclear Magnetic Resonance profiling to resolve mass-transport mechanisms of the CWA bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfide (sulfur mustard) simulant, methyl salicylate (MS), through a two-layered polyurethane TPC, where each layer absorbs liquids using different mechanisms (passive diffusion through pores and solubilization with the liquid). Depth profiles obtained at increasing time-points post-contamination demonstrated (a) dynamics of MS volume spread through the coating, (b) polymer swelling by a significant increase in the thickness of one of the layers and its relationship with overall coating thickness and contamination mass, and (c) preferential sites within the bulk for MS localization. Information of the type obtained from this exemplar system can be correlated to the physiochemical properties of the liquid contaminant as well as contact hazard and vapor hazard measurements to facilitate next generation coating development. Moreover, time-resolved determination of multiple liquid mass-transport mechanisms in an optically opaque multilayered coating were demonstrated noninvasively.

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : As described herein, a simple one-step hydrosilylation reaction was employed to synthesize alicyclic epoxy silicone prepolymers by using poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylhydrosiloxane) (PDMS-PHMS) with different hydrogen contents and 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene-1,2 epoxide (VCHO) as precursors. The structures of the synthesized epoxy polysiloxane oligomer was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy techniques, thus confirming the successful synthesis of the prepolymers. With the addition of an appropriate amount of cationic photoinitiator, the epoxy polysiloxane prepolymers undergo cationic polymerization under ultraviolet light irradiation and were quickly cured to yield series of epoxy polysiloxane resin films. The performances of these cured films were tested and characterized by various techniques such as UV transmittance, thermal weight loss analysis, and contact angle and pencil hardness measurements. The results revealed that the surfaces of these films were uniform and transparent, and these films had excellent heat resistance, acid resistance, hydrophobicity, and ink removal properties. In addition, the influence of the cycloaliphatic epoxy monomer content on the curing behavior and network performance is explored. This study reveals that the curing rate increases as the amount of grafted cycloaliphatic epoxy monomer is increased and that a denser crosslinking network provides the resultant film. Finally, the photocurable silicone material investigated herein is simple to prepare and has excellent performance, and has potential applications in the field of anti-smudge coatings.
