In this paper, a bag made of leather was taken as a case study. A sustainability assessment methodology, given the major concern on carbon footprint (CF) and environmental risk assessment (ERA), were combined to derive complementaty criteria for the ecodesign of leather products, thus the effect of ecological properties of leather on finished products were analyzed. It was concluded that the key to leather product ecodesign is to choose leather.
Leather's ecological properties directly determine their values of carbon footprint and environmental risk assessment. It was shown that, the process, clean-energy usage and the waste disposal have impacts on carbon footprint. Different countries and processes resulted in great gaps in leather's carbon footprint. Banned azo colorants have the most carcinogenic risk amongst the hazardous compounds used in the leather industry. Thus, the leather is crucial in the process of ecodesign for leather products, the ecological criteria and supplier selection are rigorous.
On the premise of aesthetic design, the perspective provided by the indicators of different nature was balanced to accomplish a fair evaluation. The selection of leather produced under sustainable criteria and the reduction of the materials consumption was recommended, since the area requirements would be minimized and the absence of hazardous compounds would ensure safety conditions during the use stage.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Case study - Carbon footprint - Environmental risk assessment

Produits antisolairesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Decades of research on sun-induced skin damage have led the industry to develop anduse new UV filters especially for UVA protection and optimizing their formulation to afford a photostable and well balanced UVA/UVB protection. The European regulation is active in registering all sunscreens according to high standards of consumer protection through a dual commitment to safety and efficacy. The major challenges for both the cosmetic industry and health agencies are the following : I) consumer understanding and attitudes behavior implying and appropriate communication of sun-induced damage and guidance on the choice of an adequate protection product - II) improvement of the sensoriality of formulas for better compliance - III) increased efficacy together with a decreased amount of UV filters using synergistic combinations to reduce cost and environmental impact, and IV) protection of the environment through use of predictive methods and assessment of the ecotoxicity of both filters and products (impact on water, bioaccumulation) and their eco-conception (life cycle analysis, green chemistry). Procédés de fabricationIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : For over 35 years, Nature has been at the heart of the company business. Each SILAB active ingredient starts its history as a natural raw material, a source of active molecules capable of endogenously reactivating the skin's original resources.
For each development, SILAB guarantees a perfect mastery of natural, from the raw material up to the manufactured ingredient, corresponding to the Mastering natural® program specifications. The resulting active ingredient is natural with no compromise on safety, quality and efficacy. These 3 parameters are considered very early in each active ingredient development.
The neck and décolleté area symbolizes femininity and needs to be cosseted with the application of adapted beauty care. This fragile area, exposed to the effects of time, gravity and external stresses, shows evidence of the early signs of aging. However, there is a lack of care dedicated to this body area.
The aim of this study was to develop a natural active ingredient, which is safe, of high quality, with identified active molecules and effective on biological markers involved in the appearance of sagging neck and décolleté skin.
