(Wikipedia)

PolymèresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Microparticle composite thin films (MCTFs) have applications in a variety of fields, ranging from water filtration, to advanced energy storage, to medical devices. Variations in processing parameters during casting and solidification have been demonstrated to lead to morphological and therefore property changes in the final film. However, the wide range and number of possible combinations of parameters can make robust process–structure (PS) linkages a complex problem. Material informatics has shown to be well suited for developing PS linkages in other materials, but there are challenges that must first be addressed for MCTFs given the lack of separation between the characteristic length scales of the microstructure (i.e., particles, pores, etc.) and the film thickness. The objective of this work is to identify reduced-order spatial models and machine learning algorithms to address these problems. To achieve this, simulated microstructures of microparticle distributions based upon slot die coating simulations have been generated. Reduced-order representations of the microstructures were then created to capture variation in the microstructure across small slices through thickness of the film using two-point particle autocorrelation statistics and principal component analysis. Results showed that predictive PS linkages can be created using Gaussian process regression between the final film morphology and processing parameters; however, image size must be considered to ensure convergence in spatial statistics to increase accuracy.
Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Reinforcement of elastomers with submicron fillers, well defined in size, is expected to lead to optimization of mechanical properties; e.g. the modulus or the energy needed to break the material, with respect to more usual fillers of larger and less defined sizes. We present, as an example, a few results for a model system of small silica spheress (B30, D~200 Ã…, and B40, D~400 Ã…) dispersed in a matrix made by filmification of latex particles. The mechanical properties are measured by monitoring the modulus as a function of elongation. We then try to correlate them with the state of aggregation of the charges, using Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS). Note de contenu : - Some preliminary results : mechanical properties

SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The limited colloidal stability of alkyd emulsions compared to that of organic solvent-borne alkyd paints is a well-known problem. For environmental reasons, however, the alkyd emulsions have a great advantage since they are waterborne. In this study, the influence of emulsifier and initial droplet size on the mechanical stability of alkyd emulsions was investigated. Anionic emulsifiers have been shown previously to be more effective than nonionic emulsifiers in the formation of alkyd emulsions. This study showed that an anionic emulsifier also gave more stable emulsions at lower concentrations than did the nonionics. If the concentration was increased, emulsions stabilized with a nonionic emulsifier showed the same stability as the one with the anionic emulsifiers. However, too high a concentration of surfactants is undesirable in paints, since it increases the water sensitivity of the paint film. The mechanical stability of emulsions stabilized with anionic emulsions was less sensitive to the initial droplet size than emulsions stabilized with a nonionic emulsifier.
