TissésIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : It is a common practice to predict not only the first, but also the last ply failures (FPF and LPF) in design cycle of laminated composites. As the name implies the predictions are traditionally performed using ply-by-ply analyses. Alternatively we explore here the use of homogenized equivalent strength parameters in LPF as well as FPF predictions, as our thin ply NCF material can make homogenized laminate concept much more practical and attractive in design. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this paper, the glass fiber chopped mat and unsaturated polymer were used to fabricate composite with different plies, including 3, 5 and 7 plies, and the mechanical property of specimens with a 10 mm hole were investigated. The effect of open hole of notched strength was discussed. from finite element simulation in MSC-Marc software, the characteristic distance was calculated and used to evaluate the sensitivity of open hole. The relation between volume fraction and characteristic distance was also analyzed. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENT : Materials - Specimen preparation - Tensile test - Characteristic distance

VitrificationIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Ambient, amine-cured epoxy compositions exist within the dual constraints of VOC regulation and the vitrification effect, which limits the ultimate Tg of these materials. These combined constraints result in epoxy products that are densely crosslinked and which contain appreciable quantities of nonfugitive diluents or plasticizers. Such materials tend to be more brittle than traditional solvent-based epoxy coatings based on solid epoxy resin and polyamide hardeners. There is thus a need for a practical method to measure their fracture toughness. This work introduces the method of essential work as a useful way to determine the fracture toughness of thermoset systems. This method is then used to relate fracture toughness to the crosslink network structures of amine-cured epoxy compositions. The test compositions are varied systematically with a view to structure/properties interpretation, and employ an in situ chain extension approach to "grow" more ductile networks. Solvent uptake of selected compositions is also determined, and the relative trade-off between ductility vs. solvent uptake is examined. ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Fracture tests were conducted on bulk samples of a rubber-toughened epoxy that models the fracture behavior of commercial structural adhesives. The samples were loaded with a variety of loading histories. The histories were selected to examine the dependency of fracture energy on loading rate, loading level, time under load, and recovery after loading. The results suggest that unless the load levels are a substantial fraction of the failure load, the loading history has little effect, at least for the time scales studied here. When the loads are high, however, the time under load becomes important and produces significant increases in toughness. If the sample is unloaded and allowed to recover, some but all of the additional toughness is lost. These results are consistent with a viscoelastic toughening mechanism and can be qualitatively explained with sample crack-tip blunting model.
