PolyimidesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In previous work, composite intake valves for use in internal combustion (IC) engines were manufactured by resin transfer molding (RTM) and demonstrated in a fully functional IC engine on a dynamometer. These valves consisted of a high temperature polyimide matrix, LaRC PETI-RFI, reinforced with a carbon fiber preform. While this previous work successfully demonstrated the potential for composite intake valves, several issues were noted including excesive surface porosity on a result of inadequate process pressure due to a lack of sealing in the resin transfer die.
In the current work, improvements to the sealing of the die have been made in an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of pressure generated from differential thermal expansion of the polyimide matrix and the die during the cure stage. Additionally, the development of preforms resulting in higher fiber volume fractions, a transition to the lower viscosity polyimide, LaRC PETI-RTM, and the utilization of vacuum-assist during resin transfer molding were investigated to assess the effects on the as-molded surface quality.
The results of the processing study suggest that, with continued process development in the areas outlined, high quality, porosity-free composite intake valves can be manufactured by resin transfer molding.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10291

Simulation par ordinateurIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Nowadays, the aircraft parts that are installed in zones subjected to temperatures between 200°C and 400°C are almost entirely metallic. Alloys based on aluminium, titanium and steel dominate these zones while composites are a no-go for this temperature range. This is due to the limitation in operating temperatures of conventional thermosets as well as the lack of economic viability of ceramic-matrix composites at temperatures below 400°C. Simulation of a known process, combined with innovative materials, might overcome the rule and increase the percentage of composites used in the "warm" zones of aircraft. Moulage par transfert de résine sous videIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Reusable alternative replacement of consumable vacuum membranes (vac bagging) for composite vacuum moulding continues to become more popular as moulders realize they are able to potentially pay for themselves within three moulding cycles. This fact raises the question why the whole composite moulding community does not immediately embrace this technology adavance. Note de contenu : - Various applications

Production en sérieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Surface-RTM process. The newly developed surface RTM process allows fiber reinforced visible parts with paintable surfaces for automotive construction to be inexpensively produced in large series. By flood-coating the surface-RTM part with a PU layer directly in the cavity, paintable components can be produced without further intermediate steps. Revêtements poudreIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The EU regulation on the CO2 emissions of new cars sets out the targets for the average new car fleet across Europe to achieve 95g/km by 2020. The challenge is to reduce the weight of vehicles to meet the EU CO2 emissions targets without incurring a cost penalty and, ideally, achieving cost savings. The business opportunity is to implement technologies and design solutions to deliver vehicle weight savings that are market ready for 2020. Major weight savings can be achieved by replacing conventional materials with composite materials. Composites can reduce vehicle weight, increase fuel efficiency and improve power-to-weight ratios, leading to an overall better performance.
