Polymérisation en émulsionIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A cationic polyacrylate emulsion (CPAE) with a core-shell structure was prepared by seed polymerization. The emulsion copolymerization was carried out with the core monomoers of butyl acrylate (BA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA), the shell monomers of BA, MMA, and a home-made cationic monomer with the initiator potassium persulfate. The structure of CPAE was characterized. No 'C=C' double bond was detected in the structure of CPAE by FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectra, indicating that the polymerization reaction was complete. DSC curves showed that there were two glass transition temperature in the structure of CPAE, indicating that the emulsion particle featured a core-shell structure. The core-shell structure of CPAE was also confirmed by TEM observation. Many improvements to the coating properties emerged when CPAE was used as a leather finishing agent. The result leathers has uniform and clean grain and comfortable handle. The coating had strong adhesion and its resistance to wet and dry rub fastness was up to grade 4.5. Practically, a compromise is achieved between the excellent mechanical properties of polyurethane and the lower cost of the acrylic emulsions. The attempt of the research presented here is to find out a copolymerization method using free radical emulsion techniques as well as to study the structure-properties relationship.

Retannage
Tannage synthétiqueIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The correlations between the comonomer ratio of vinyl polymer tanning agents and their application properties were studied by the two-power regression orthogonal design. Eight monomers (AN-acrylonitrile, AM-acrylamide, MAA-methyl acrylic acid, MMA-methyl methacrylate, VAc-vinyl acetate, MA-methyl acrylate, EA-ethyl acrylate, BA-butyl acrylate) were separately chosen to copolymerize with acrylic acid (AA) to form the corresponding copolymers. We measured ten proper indexes of the application properties for each copolymer used in retanning such as thickness increment ratio, shrinking temperature increment, phy-mech properties, compressibility factor etc. The effects of the eight comonomers (AN, AM, MAA, MMA, VAc, MA, EA, BA) on the property indexes of the leather samples were also discussed.
It has been found that the comonomers with polar groups can increase the tensile strength and the shrinking temperature of the leather samples, but they may affect the softness of the leather samples and the pliability of the collagen fibrils. The comonomer of AM makes an outstanding contribution to the fullness of leather samples. The acrylate comonomers, such as MA, EA, BA, can improve the pliability of collagen fibrils of retanned leather samples and the improvement extent is related to the carbon chain length of the ester groups. The comonomers with methyl groups (such as MAA, MMA) can decrease the pliability of the leather samples.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Application of tannages-see details in Table III - Determination of leather properties

VerreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Octafluorocyclobutane and acrylic acid (C4F8-co-AA) are plasma copolymerized onto low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and glass slides under various pulsation periods of radio frequency pulsed plasma. The surface wettability of plasma polymer coating is traditionally considered as a substrate-independent property. The combined effect of ultrathin C4F8-co-AA coatings and LDPE substrate on surface wettability is presented. The high concentration of the carboxylic acid functional groups gives rise to hydrophilicity via lowering duty cycle, and substrate impact gives rise to hydrophobicity for ultrathin coatings. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and coating thickness measurements confirmed that the sudden increase in water contact angle for the lower duty cycle is influenced by the hydrophobic substrate for ultrathin polymer coatings. It is highlighted that the precise control over the surface wettability is attained by tuning the plasma parameters. The substrate-dependent wettability for flat substrate persisted for longer than 8 weeks, which demonstrates wetting stability for ultrathin coatings Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL SECTION : Materials - Plasma deposition - Characterization

TaninsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Resins were prepared from phenol formaldehyde and Uncaria gambier tannin by copolymerization at 100°C. Tannin was used to substitute phenol upto 50% using 5, 8 and 11% alkali concentrations. Adhesive formulations and gluing conditions were examined by preparing laboratory 3-ply sal (Shorea robusta) boards (53.34cm x 53.34cm). In order to study the effect of alkali concentration and molar ratio of phenol with tannin, the gluing results obtained were analyzed and it was revealed that the glue shear strength of the plywood can meet the requirements of the Indian Standards IS: 303-1989, for exterior grade plywood. Hence Uncaria gambier tannin would be a desirable substitute for phenol as a low cost material and the studied tannin based adhesive is suitable for industrial application.
