This is due to the years-long exterior exposure time required to validate a new product's performance, in addition to the standard formulation and test cycle time of several months. Many attributes are associated with the assessment of a coating's weatherability, such as grain-crack resistance, adhesion and chalk. In the architecture semi-gloss to high-gloss space, an emphasis has rightly been placed on gloss retention as a distinguishing attribute between high performance and economy product classes.

Souplesse (mécanique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Over the past few years, the challenges of globalisation, consolidation and economical point of view have meant that manufacturers of epoxy formulations have to constantly improve their capability to meet the needs of customers. An active area for advancement is that of epoxy and polyamide resin with castor oil. Generally, people working in the coating industries are familiar with castor oil, but this paper provides information on the new use of castor oil in epoxy and polyamide resin. This novel product (castor oil-modified epoxy resin/castor oil-modified polyamide) provides a previously unattainable combination and improved flexibility and toughness to a variety of ambient cure applications. This communication will review the performance of these castor oil-modified epoxy and polyamide resin surface coatings and adhesives. Based on the results of this study, these systems offer some advantages without much affecting the traditional properties of epoxy and polyamide resin in a variety of applications. Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A waterborne two-pack polyurethane finish coating formulated for military aircraft provides extended durability performance suited for Australia’s harsh climate as well as substantial reductions in content of volatile organic compounds when compared with high-solids solvent-based aerospace coatings. A formulating practice using commercially available hydroxyl-functional polyurethane dispersions combined with hydrophilically modified polyisocyanate resins enables compositions to be made that are suitable for spray application, have drying properties useful for aircraft workers, and cure to form films with the specified resistance and flexibility properties. Revêtement métalliqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The specular gloss of metallic coatings from the automotive industry can be well measured by current glossmeters when the geometry is appropriately chosen from 20°, 60°, and 85° based on the gloss levels observed. However, the measurements are discontinuous and even nonmonotonic at the breakpoints dividing samples into different gloss levels in the whole range, which causes confusion and inconvenience for industry applications. In this study, attempts were made to link the measurements at the three geometries to be continuous monotonically and in the meanwhile to improve the accuracy of estimating visual gloss. A psychophysical experiment based on a magnitude method was carried out to assess the gloss of metallic coatings with different colors and textures. The visually scaled gloss data were compared with spectrophotometric measurements and instrumental specular gloss values under different geometries. With different weighing coefficients for measurements at individual geometries depending on the gloss levels, a model was proposed to describe the visual surface gloss of metallic coatings comprehensively via a practical metric based on the geometry-dependent measurements. In this way, each sample would have a unique overall gloss value highly correlated with its perceptual evaluation over the entire gloss range.
