The hyperbranched polyglycerol, (BPG), was synthesized through anionic ring-opening polymerization from glycidol using 1-butanol as the starting material. The branched structure of BPG is presented and described. The presence of linear, dendritic and terminal units was confirmed by Moore et al. (Prog Surf Sci 88(3):213–236, 2013) 13C NMR spectroscopy. BPG was then used as a performance additive in a water-based flexographic printing ink. The impact of a small amount of hyperbranched BPG on the printing ink color was examined by studying the optical density of a full-tone area, the total color difference, ΔE ab *, and the gloss of the dried ink film. The colorfastness to dry and wet rubbing of overprinted samples was studied. The investigated BPG is shown to be able to improve colorfastness to dry and wet rubbing of prints.

Development of high solid resin is an important technique for low VOC coating. The simplest way of synthesising high solid resin is decreasing its molecular weight. But the performance of such type of low molecular weight resin is not satisfactory for coating application. Development of highly branched polymers helps to achieve low viscosity, high surface functionalities, high reactivity and more compact globular structures, which have potential scope for coating application.
In this paper, the special properties of hyperbranched polymers and recent advances on the development of such type of resins and their modifications, particularly for coating application have been described.Note de contenu : - Structural aspects of dendritic polymer

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hyperbranched polymers are a new class of polymeric material belonging to the group of macromolecules with highly branched structures and a large number of end groups. The structure of these polymers has a great impact on their physical and chemical properties. Many commercially-available chemicals can be used as the monomers in these systems, which should extend the availability and accessibility of hyperbranched polymers with various new end groups, architectures and properties. Because of their unique behaviour, hyperbranched polymers are suitable for a wide range of applications, especially for coatings.
This paper provides a concise review on molecular architecture and a general outline of methods to synthesise hyperbranched polymers and summarises their physico-chemical properties. The hyperbranched concept is discussed in terms of preparative methods, applications and advantages with respect to polymers for coatings. Hyperbranched polyesters, alkyds, epoxies, polyacrylates and siloxanes are discussed. Examples for other polymers such as polyurea, polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) and polyamides are also given.Note de contenu : - MOLECULAR ARCHITECTURE : Dendritic structure

Tannage Résumé : In this study, diethyl bis(2-hydroxyethyl) aminomethyl phosphonate was modified by hexamethylene diisocyanate, and then was utilized to partly replace the isocyanates to prepare hyperbranched polyurethanes (HPU-DPAs). The hyperbranched polyurethanes were then employed in the retanning process of wet blue. The shrinkage temperature, average thickness as well as mechanical properties of leather before and after retanning were acquired. The flammability of retanned leather was measured by cone calorimeter test. The morphologies of wet blue and leather after retanning by HPU-DAP were obtained using a scanning electron microscope. Results showed that the average thickness, tensile strength and elongation at break of leather were all improved after retanning. Retanning by HPU-DAPs can effectively increase flame retardancy of final leather. The influence of the prepared polymer on buffalo leather was investigated and compared with the most commonly applied products, chrome tan with vegetable extract retannage. The properties of the treated leather, namely tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength, deformability, scanning electron microscope examination, thermal stability and appearance were studied.
