It was found that the effect of temperature on the moisture permeability of natural sheepskin and regenerated leather was significantly greater than that of time. The performance and trend of moisture permeability of recycled leather under both time and temperature are similar to that of sheepskin as a whole. At a low temperature below 50°C, the moisture permeability of recycled leather is comparable to that of natural sheepskin ; as the temperature rises, its moisture permeability gradually opens up the gap with that of sheepskin. By SEM characterisation, it was found that the fibrous tissues of the natural sheepskin papilla layer were tightly connected and the fibrous tissues of the reticulated layer were loose and disordered ; the recycled leather mainly consisted of crushed fibrous waste and adhesive, and the fibres were stuck with adhesive between them.
(Wikipedia)
StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Looseness is a defect found in leather that reduces its quality by causing a wrinkly appearance in the finished product, resulting in a reduction in its value. Earlier studies on loose leather using microscopy and Raman spectroscopy reported a change in the collagen structure of loose leather. In this study, proteomics was used to investigate the possible molecular causes of looseness in the raw material, the first time such a study has been carried out. Proteins extracted from two regions of raw hide using two different methods were analysed; those taken from the distal axilla, an area prone to looseness, and those taken from the backbone which is less prone to looseness. Analyses using 1DE-LC-MS/MS showed that although the overall collagen concentration was similar in both areas of the hide, the distribution of the different types of collagen differed. Specifically, concentrations of type I collagen, and the collagen-associated proteoglycan decorin were lower in samples taken from the distal axilla, symptomatic of a collagen network with excess space seen for these samples using confocal microscopy. This study suggests a possible link between the molecular components of raw cattle hide and looseness and more importantly between the molecular components of skin and skin defects. There is therefore potential to develop biomarkers for looseness which will enable early preventative action. Résistance à l'humidité:Résistance à l'eauIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The Dow Corning Tester w•as introduced as an alternative for measuring water resistance in leather hecause the number of flexes to produce a leak was found to he approximately one quarter of the number required on the Maeser Tester. An investigation was conducted to determine how three possible ways of mounting specimens in the Dow Corning 'l'ester would affect water penetration. The results show that w•ater penetration is achieved faster with the Dow Corning Tester than with the Maeser Tester only when the specimens are mounted with their walls parallel tu each other during maximum extension. The gaskets prescrihed for use with the Dow Corning Tester are not essential and need not be used. When a four-by-four inch specimen is mounted to form a pouch with a middle fold before the machine is turned on, the specimens are compressed, slowing down the rate of water penetration to the extent that no saving in time is realized, compared to the Maeser Tester. In fact, with some of the leathers tested in this manner flexing had tu he terminated after 100,000 cycles because no leakage occurred, as is frequently ohserved on the Maeser Tester. The precision of the methods in which end points were reached with unahraded samples was hetter than expected, with the coefficients of variation ranging from 29 to 67 percent, compared with 100 percent termed "not unusual" in the description of the standard method issued by the American Society of Testing and Materials.
Final tabulation shows that for the water-resistant upper leathers examined the mean ratio of the number of flexes till leakage in the Maeser Tester to the number of flexes till leakage in the Dow Corning l'ester was in the vicinity of 2.5, which is somewhat lower than previously reported.Note de contenu : - Equipment

Morphologie (matériaux)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Collagen fibre bundles, which are the structural components of skin and leather, are organized in a variety of ways. Each species of animal has a characteristic arrangement, although in many cases they are similar. In animals which are commonly used for leather production, such as cattle and sheep, the arrangement of the fibre bundles has been well studied, and the existence of a relationship between the fibre bundle orientation and the physical properties of the leather is recognized. Diseases of the collagen may also have a profound effect on skin strenth. The strength of leather depends therefore on the arrangement of the collagen fibre bundles and, presumably also on the strength of the collagen itself.
Although kangaroo leather has not been studied to the same extent as the more commonly used leathers, recent studies on its physical properties and stratigraphic strength analysis have shown that there are differences between kangaroo and other leathers. To ensure that full use may be made of its capabilities, a better understanding of its structure is needed. This paper reports a histological study of kangaroo leather and compares it with bovine leather.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DG1ODE2PPey865TN7K87_gDWewPiwa55/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8994

Tannage Résumé : The chrome tanning agent is always an important material for leather manufacture because of its tanning power and the leather's sensory appeal which cannot be achieved by other tanning agents. The maturation of the chrome tanning technique over one hundred years, allows the leather produced to be distinguished by its nuances. Nowadays, it is beneficial to review the function of chrome tanning agents again because the standards of new market values and environmental requirements require more sophisticated application techniques.
The characteristics of two kinds of chrome tanning agents, such as the glucose reduced chrome powder (GCr-S) and the sulfur dioxide reduced chrome powder (SCr-S), were explored by modern analytical detection methods, including the hydrolysis and spectral absorption features; the penetration velocity and absorption rate in pickled hides. The application performance of the two chrome tanning agents used in tanning and retanning was characterised by the handle and physical/mechanical properties of leather after dyeing and fatliquoring. Because of their different composition, structure and hydrolysis characteristics of their solutions, the differences between the two chrome tanning agents in the tanning powers and the differences between the two kinds of leathers in appearance, strength and histological state are represented respectively. It was suggested how to choose and use the type of chrome tanning agent to meet the quality requirements of the leather.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Main materials - Basic characteristics of chrome tanning agent - Chrome tanning - Retanning, dyeing and fatliquoring of wet-blue - The microstructure of crust leathers
