Titre : Tannages based on aluminium (III) + titanium (IV) complexes Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Anthony D. Covington, Auteur Année de publication : 1987 Article en page(s) : p. 1-14 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The properties of titanium (IV) salts as tanning agents can be related to those of aluminum (III) and zirconium (IV), based on their general chemistries and their modes of interaction with protein. Main group element tannage is contrasted with the more familiar chromium (III) tanning reaction. The tanning mechanism of titanium (IV) probably lies between those of aluminum (III) and zirconium (IV). There is advantage in using mixed complexes of titanium (IV) and aluminum (III) if the stability is matched to the tanning conditions ; only if the species is made stable by masking with a polyhydroxy carboxylic acid salt can the basic mixed metal salt be a general pupose tanning material. Such complexes may be used to make natural, washable rugskins or substitute part of the chrome offer in shorter float processes. Randall, Auteur Année de publication : 1987 Article en page(s) : p. 15-21 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The method most commonly used to assess industrial Cr exposure is to calculate a time-weighted average to total Cr and hexavalent Cr in air. Biological monitoring is seldom performed routinely because of the difficulties with the collection and analysis of tissues and fluids for Cr. Urinary Cr and urinary Cr creatinine ratios have been most extensively investigated by researchers as potential biological indices of exposure to hexavalent Cr, and more recently, trivalent Cr. Results indicate that urinary Cr creatinine ratios on spot urine samples collected post shift provide an acute index of industrial Cr exposure. Corresponding values on basal spot urine samples reflect body burden of Cr in both welders and chrome plate workers exposed to Cr III. Data on the use of whole blood, serum, red blood cells or hair are more limited. Recent work suggests that serum Cr levels may also be an index of body burden of Cr for workers exposed to Cr VI and Cr III while red blood cell Cr may be specific to long-term exposure to Cr VI. Hair is a biopsy material which is more easily collected and analyzed for Cr exposure warrants further investigation. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The changes of the grain structure in pig skins during the bating process were observed with the scanning electron microscope. In addition, the amount of hydroxyproline released from pig skins during the bating process was determined and some physical properties of the bated skin pieces were measured.
The humps of dermal papillae in the delimed skins were slight and the surface of papillae was flat. When the delimed skin was incubated with buffer solutions at pH 7.5 for 4 hr, the papillae swelled and the shapes of the surface were spherical, depresed or wrinkled. At a magnification of below 1,000 times, a new network structure was frequently observed in the surface of papillae of the skin pieces treated with pancreatin of Bacillus subtilis (B. sub) protease. This network was composed of the bundled grain fibrils.
The grain fibrils in the delimed skin coalesced with each other and were surrounded with some amorphous substances. When treated with pancreatin, the grain fibrils were clearly exposed and separated from each other as shown by the micrographs only at high magnification.
The amount of hydroxyproline released from the skin pieces during the enzyme treatment for 4 hr was less than 1%. The values of surface elongation and strain measured with a Tensometer decreased in the pieces treated with pancreatin or sub. protease.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hLnma872R1W2Xo1wBrRU-eaWWik1yXVB/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8962

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Processors suspected that kangaroo skins preserved by freezing gave weaker, flatter leather tha similar salt preserved skins. Studies of hair-on and unhaired matchedsides have been completed to compare these preservation methods. After comparison of tensile strength, elongation at break and thickness measurements of each matching side it was concluded that preservation by freezing rather than salting had caused no deleterious effect on these properties. Previous reports of inferior leather from such skins could be attributed to difficulties in thawing large amounts of frozen skins. The convenience offered by freezing skins at the point of take-off would therefore make this a useful alternate preservation method. Since that time the growing demand for aqueous based topcoat products due in particular to lower solvent emission requirements by local municipalities has made traditional water dilutable emulsion topcoats unacceptable for many topcoating purposes. The scope of this paper identifies a family of safe, non-toxic acrylic emulsion topcoats offering a range of performance properties and favorable economics which are applicable to the softer leathers of today's leather market and which meet today's safety requirements. Their key properties feature attractive product characteristics such as low emissions and non-combustibility as was as numerous application and finished leather benefits. They offer flow/leveling and drying properties which make them suitable for conventional spray application and application by roll coater. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Based on the results reported in the previous paper (1), three kinds of conditions were selected for the solubilization of keratins by oxidative treatment with performic acid and reductive treatment with sodium thioglycolate, and under these conditions, the air recovered by the SIROLIME process was solubilized. The solubilities of the recovered steer and kip was less soluble than that from hairs. The intact and recovered hair from kip was less soluble than that from steer. Further, the intact and recovered hair and fibers from steer and kip were observed with scanning electron microscope. It was shown that the medulla did not occur in fine hair fibers from kip, the ratio of the cross selectional area of medulla to that of cortex was smaller in the recovered hair than in the intact hair, and the cuticle was damaged more vigorously in the case of treatment with performic acid than in the case of treatment with thioglycolate. Amino acid analyses of the hairs recovered from steer and kip by the SIROLIME process revealed that the content of cystine decreased and new amino acid, lanthionine, was formed during the process. The quantity of lanthionine increased as the liming time was prolonged.
These results indicate that it is better to adopt the oxidative solubilization method rather than the reductive one with thioglycolate for the intention of the effective utilization of the recovered hair by the modification of solubilized hair keratins.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/18Roq1jy_Nh-oySmvG4QfbQXr0SATyAIz/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8983

Aluminium tannage of the modified collagen produces white leather with good thermal and dyebath stability, in contrast to that produced by similar tannage of unmodified collagen. However, the treatment also results in excessive swelling and reduced dye affinity.
The aromatic 1,2-dicarboxylic acid groups also act as strong binding sites for chromium, but not for titanium or zirconium. The shrinkage temperature of the modified collagen, after chrome tannage, is exeptionally high, whereas the thermal stability after titanium or zirconium tannage is little different from that attained by similar tannage of untreated collagen.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/13Q8bXdCYpE9NzEThZ7FUXozmPVsluK7Y/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8984

By far the largest increased has been seen in the class of retanning agents based on acrylic chemistry.
The proliferation of acrylic based syntans has led to some confusion concerning the optimum use of these materials.
The work reported in this paper characterises a number of different acrylic syntans in terms of their ability to tan hide and explores the behaviour of these products on chrome leather. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Many studies and research have been conducted during tha last decade with the main purpose of replacing the present universally accepted chrome tanning by other mineral tanning procedures and/or vegetable tanning.
Aluminium salt tanning, zirconium, aldehyde tannage, syntans, vegatable extract and other combined tannages were studied in the past. Until the present time not one of the above tanning procedures was practical and/or adopted by the leather industry. This was because no one could meet the chrome tanning characteristics related to the high shrinkage temperature.
The pretanning free of chrome procedure, which is effective in increasing the Ts of the hide to 75°C, requires only minimum quantities of other tanning agents such as aluminium, vegetable extracts, or syntans, including chrome-syntans, to achieve the boil temperature and produce characteristics similar to a chrome tanned leather.
The present paper is a new contribution toward a tanning free of chrome procedure and describes different tanning agents which we believe will become the universal tanning accepted in the next century.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ltwsCMJHLbK3Xl-ozoTSmowvPle6BTrS/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8986

Tannage Résumé : For producers of wet blues and tanners processing wet blues, the qualify of the resulting leather receives first consideration. Nevertheless, today they have also to think of quantity and kind of chrome containing residual floats and other wastes when laying down a technology. The trend to produce wet blues in specialized plants and to carry out all subsequent operations elsewhere, forces people to reconsider the practical aspects of conventional working methods.
Type ans process details of the chrome tannage practised by the wet blue producer greatly influences the amount of unused chrome tanning materials left in the residual floats and is illustrated by means of matched sides trials. The effects if various tanning methods on the chrome emission of a tannery using wet blues as "raw material" are analyzed. Results of retanning trials are reported.
It can be shown that highly exhausting chrome tanning processes offer advantages concerning chrome containing residual floats not only for the wet blue tanner but also for tanneries using wet blues to manufacture finished leather.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1feCLJFDNno7CYWRLFW331wxK2BIIlfFk/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8990

Tannage Résumé : For several centuries enzymes in the form of bate used in deliming have been part of the tanning process, and for the past seventy years research has been considucted on enzymes used for unhairing. These enzymes belong to a general classification known as proteolytic enzymes which catalyze the hydrolysis of a variety of different proteins. More recently, carbohydrases, which catalyze the breakdown of polyaccharides, and lipases, which hydrolyze fats into fatty acids and glycerol, have been proposed for the processing of hides and skins. These uses of enzymes have been the subject of a large amount of published literature from around the world. This review will summarize this research covering the period from 1965 to 1986 and is intended to provide some insight on the potential uses for enzymes in the tannery. What is meant is that there are considerable amounts of fundamental knowledge available through proven research and developments to serve as foundations for an innovative tanner in developing a process to manufacture leather which improved characteristics. In this paper, an attempt has been made to put forward some of those recent innovations in leather science like oxazolidine, polycarboxylic acids for low-chrome & hydrothermally stable leather, chrome-aluminium-polycarboxylic acid for practically chrome free tannages and various applications of fatliquors, for improved leather. The results of that work, never-the-less,provided a foundation that enabled a relatively simple classification to be made ; e.g. tanning vs auxiliary.Evidence was also presented concerning the effects of each type of syntan in a retannage context. It was also stated that mixed retannages could provide optimum usage of these materials by utilising the advantages of both types.
This paper takes the characterisation process one step further and explores, in more detail, the behaviour of each type of syntan. Also presented are results obtained from mixed system retannages to further clarify the rationale for selecting products to meet set targets.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gsg5os1VQU0VS4JL2TQnlMlb5OxrYVWY/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8993

Morphologie (matériaux)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Collagen fibre bundles, which are the structural components of skin and leather, are organized in a variety of ways. Each species of animal has a characteristic arrangement, although in many cases they are similar. In animals which are commonly used for leather production, such as cattle and sheep, the arrangement of the fibre bundles has been well studied, and the existence of a relationship between the fibre bundle orientation and the physical properties of the leather is recognized. Diseases of the collagen may also have a profound effect on skin strenth. The strength of leather depends therefore on the arrangement of the collagen fibre bundles and, presumably also on the strength of the collagen itself.
Although kangaroo leather has not been studied to the same extent as the more commonly used leathers, recent studies on its physical properties and stratigraphic strength analysis have shown that there are differences between kangaroo and other leathers. To ensure that full use may be made of its capabilities, a better understanding of its structure is needed. This paper reports a histological study of kangaroo leather and compares it with bovine leather.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DG1ODE2PPey865TN7K87_gDWewPiwa55/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8994

Tannage Résumé : Some 90 million butcher hogskins per year are potentially available and can be utilized for leather manufacture. For optimum utilization with a minimum waste problem, a beamhouse and processing plant central to the currently concentrated pork packing plants is envisioned. Fresh pigskins brought to this facility would receive beamhouse treatment followed by a preservation process and could then be shipped to pigskin leather manufacturers wherever they are located. Studies of solvent dehydration preservation processes have shown that these processes can be used after bating. Dehydrated bated stock offers a number of advantages: (1) A light-weight product, one-sixth the shipping weight of fleshed raw pigskins is obtained. (2) The stocks keep indefinitely under most ambient conditions, unless contacted by liquid water. (3) The hydrated stock can be graded and sold on the basis of its visible surface defects. (4) Water can be easily added to the stock with no adverse effect on subsequent tanning. (5) Leathers from the dehydrated pigskins subsequently re-wet and tanned have fewer oil spots and better chrome distribution than control leathers. Cooper, Auteur Année de publication : 1987 Article en page(s) : p. 242-252 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Résumé : Pilot plant studies have been carried out on the use of the LIRITAN "Flip Flop" sole leather system with mimosa extract at ambient temperatures. The temperature of the small experimental tanks (circular pits) made from plastic was controlled solely by climatic conditions over the 26 week period of assessment, with the ambient temperature varying mainly in the region of 16° to 27°C in the summer months of this experiment. The variation of temperature in the circulation tanks was much less than this as these were insulated. In the case of commercial production in large pits there would be more of a heat-sink and the temperature variations would be less severe. This work was done to try to produce acceptable leather in tanneries which lack adequate heating facilities for a warm circulator system, thus extending the area of use of the LIRITAN system and cutting costs. One of the advantages of a warm circulator system is that the sludge formation is reduced. In this trial the accumulation of sludge at the lower temperatures has been overcome by the use of a dispersing sytan (PELLUTAX 64 – HENKEL).
Using the established warm (35°C) circulator LIRITAN system, 8 days was found to be sufficient for a satisfactory degree of tannage, using a tan liquor of 118° Barkometer (15.5° Baumé). In this trial the tannage time has been extended to two weeks with the tan strength maintained at 118° Barkometer, in order to obtain the same degree of tannage as the 8 day warm circulator system.
As a mean of comparison, each piece of leather was halved after the initial 2 weeks ambient temperature tannage. One half was processed directly after the ambient tannage and the other half was given an additional tannage by hot pitting at 40°C and 140° Barkometer (18° Baumé) for 4 days.
The results indicate that satisfactory sole leather can be produced in a two week ambient tannage, but that the addition of a 4 day hot pit system improved the degree of tannage, increased the density and reduced the water absorption. Whether the additional advantages conferred by the hot pitting is worth the extra effort, time, cost and installation of a limited heating system would have to be determined by each individual tanner.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Wx9Uq4kw6kkINlYyqFGB_GLOw0-2PQbH/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9036

Tannage Résumé : In contrast to the direction of the domestic tanning industry over the past decade, environmental regulation in the mid-1980's is a growth industry. Until recently, industry environmental concerns have been limited to a few major issues. During the decade of the 1970's, for example, the primary issue was development of industry effluent guidelines. After almost fifteen years of difficult negotiation and litigation, these have finally been proposed in what is likely to become their final form. During the early 1980's, attention turned to the disposal of hazardous solid waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Through a major effort in this area, the industry was successful in obtaining an interim exclusion for trivalent chromium-containing waste. This exclusion, unfortunately, has never been finalized, and may never be. Today, we have a proliferation of regulatory developments of potential concern to the leather tanning industry. These cover all areas of environmental management, and reflect as well growing concerning with occupational health and safety. It is the purpose of this paper to summarize those regulatory developments most likely to have major impact on the leather tanning industry through the balance of this decade. As with any forecast, it must be remembered that what we have to offer, although possibly well-informed, is by no means infallible. Will, Auteur Année de publication : 1987 Article en page(s) : p. 311-322 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : By far the largest propositiob of organic solvents in leather finishing is used for top coating, particularly in applying solvent-based lacquers. Emission can be reduced by using lacquer systems based on acqueous emulsions or optimally by solvent-free finishing. Modifications of this kind in top coating generally reduce the fastness and the quality of the leather.
It is possible to improve the fastness properties obtained with the finishing systems by increasing the water-repellency of the leather in retannage and fatliquoring. Results to the same effect are obtained with binders that possess good resistance to water and give satisfactory flexibility and softness. On leather prepared in this way, a fastness level such as that obtainable with solvent-based lacquer top coats can be achieved with lacquers based on aqueous emulsions. Even roll coats can be achieved with lacquers based on aqueous emulsions will often suffice to achieve good fastness properties on leathers that have been rendered water-repellent. The finishing of leather without organic solvents, i.e. without top lacquer, caused a more or less strong change of the leather handle. Solvent-free finishing systems of this kind are available with or without croos-linking agents, and applied in sufficiently thick coats, they give good fastness properties.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/17aY-FQ2_NIUO1OmT0ODZI1M9wFUn45UL/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9044

Some of the projected benefits of modernization were standardization of quality ; labor, material and energy savings ; reduced number of rejects and increases in yield.
Many tanneries and equipment manufacturers throughout the world were visited in order to insure that the best available technology was used in the design of the new facility.
The construction period was approximately two years. The first tan mill was run on January 27, 1986.

Tannage Résumé : Samples of hides from several established cases of bovine dermatophilosis were processed for fine structural evaluation of associated pathologies, employing standard transmission electron microscopical analytical procedures. The hides of 2 of the cases were chrome-tanned into shoe upper leathers and physically examined for gross defects attribuable to the disease process. Classical changes observed within the infected hides were hyperkeratosis, edematous epidermal strata denoted by widening of intercellular spaces with loss of cellular contracts, total degeneration and necrosis of epidermal cells, detachment of basal epidermal cells from underlining basal laminae, breakages in contiuities of basal laminae, collagen fibrillar destruction with spatial disorientation in the grain, and dislodgement of collagen bundles by excessive cellular infiltrates within the corium. The most commonly associated pathogen - Dermatophilus congolensis was located within the keratinized epidermal layers, and appeared to have contributed immensely towards evoking the inflammatory reactions. Gross changes of leather from infected hides were manifested as blemishes in the form of pittings and wrinklings on the grain enamels. These changes were described to fine structural pathologies of the grain and corium which bodered on structural framework of collagen fibrils, fibers and bundles. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Determining hide quality has long been equated with determining cure quality. The central assumption was that a well cured hide was completely and positively protected against all deterioration or quality loss. Many practical experiences have long indicated that this simplified assumption was not completely accurate. However, except for the case of delay in actually curing the hides, the concept that well cured means well protected has enjoyed wide and unchallenged acceptance.
In the last few years the role of halophilic bacteria has become more realistically appraised in the hide curing and storage process (1,2). Now this knowledge of halophiles requires some re-evaluation of the old assumption and position relative to hide cure quality and practice. In order to put this new information into perspective the central observations and procedures for determining cure quality need to be clearly in mind and properly organized. All too often in the past, cure data have been treated too heavily with minimal understanding, and the results have been catastrophically confusing. If the concept does not make sense, then application of the principle becomes confusing and frustrating. The objective of this review of current cure evaluation procedures is to establish a clear picture for the sake of understanding and controlling cured hide quality.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RLeETOxulWc6IpKAI9ZMJq_4KnDDnTOL/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9058

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This study evaluates the effectiveness of the bacteristat 1,2-Benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) as a hide preservative. The study is unique in scope in that hide and leather conditions had been evaluated from the hair state through to the crust leather state as the exclusive determination of effectiveness of preservation, since the full extent of damage is often not discernable until hides are processed into crust leather where the grain quality and other properties can be truly evaluated. More than 1300 hides are involved.
The study demonstrates that brine cured hides held one year after treatment with BIT in the raceway are significantly superior in hide and leather quality to those from an untreated raceway. Also it demonstrates that fresh hides treated with BIT in combination with boric acid can be held successfully for twelve days. Finally, BIT was found to reduce fluid exudation which accompanies breakdown of cellular structure, resulting in shrinkage of hide weight.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oj1h8woXF1atHcGutk9iRNddsBDwL__d/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9120
