Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The stresses at break of fragile materials like acrylic resin and composite material for orthopedic use measured in bending are higher than those measured in direct traction. Tests on a composite material for orthopedic use laminated with 6 glass-perlon-acrylic layers (PV-2P-VP) for orthopedic use made it possible to identify its mechanical characteristics and to highlight the influence of the direction of cutting of the samples. The mechanical properties of this material indicate dispersion in the direction of the orientation of the molding which shows values of stress at break and of the Young's modulus which are reduced compared to the values measured in the perpendicular direction. The choice motivates the statistical approach which leads us to apply the Weibull model to assess the dangerousness of a stress in terms of probability of failure. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental values. The morphological study of the fracture facies makes it possible to draw up an inventory of the various mechanisms at the origin of the damage and the rupture of these materials and thus to locate the most dominant.

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of zinc borate loading level and electron beam irradiation dosages on flame retardancy and physico-mechanical properties of ATH-ABS blends. The increasing of irradiation dosage has gradually induced the gel content of all ATH-ABS blends by forming crosslinked networks. The addition of ATH and zinc borate has significantly increased the crystallinity of ABS blends as evident by the elimination of the hump on XRD curves. However, the application of lower electron beam irradiation dosages (≤150 kGy) has slightly decreased the crystallinity of 0 phr and 20 phr zinc borate added samples. The increasing zinc borate loading level from 5 phr to 20 phr has gradually increased the flame retardancy of non-irradiated samples by inducing char formation. Besides, the increasing of irradiation dosage has significantly improved the flame retardancy of all samples. The addition of zinc borate up to 15 phr has effectively increased the tensile strength of all ATH-ABS blends by enhancing the interfacial adhesion between the ATH particles and ABS matrix. The increment of irradiation dosages up to 250 kGy has gradually increased the tensile strength by introducing the formation of crosslinking networks in ABS matrix. However, polyurethane composite materials are highly inflammable and thus require the use of flame retardants. This study selected green and environment-friendly flame retardants such as expanded graphite, aluminum hydroxide, and kaolin to be used as individual or paired retardants to produce polyurethane composites. By analyzing the potential and mechanical properties of the polyurethane composites, it was found that the composite material with the flame retardant composed of graphite and modified kaolin had better flame retardancy, smoke suppression performance, and high thermal stability.
Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of montmorillonite (MMT) type nanoclay content and maleic anhydride (MA) grafted polylactide (PLA) copolymer compatibilization on the mechanical properties of PLA nanocomposites; compounded by twin-screw extrusion melt-mixing followed with injection molding for shaping of bulk specimens. Successively intercalated and exfoliated structures of the nanocomposites were observed by XRD and TEM analysis, including the chemical interactions by FTIR. Mechanical tests indicated that use of only 1 wt% MMT resulted in significant improvements in many mechanical properties of PLA. Increases were only 14 % in flexural modulus and 7 % in flexural strength, but more than 6 times in ductility and as much as 85 % in fracture toughness values. After MA compatibilization these improvements were much enormous, being more than 22 times in ductility and 119 % in fracture toughness.
