TiO2 is the most commonly used pigment in white UV cured flexo ink due to its high refractive index providing high opacity even at thin film thickness. Unfortunately, absorbs a portion of the UV spectrum and has a detrimental effect on the curing of the ink. In addition, a high loading of TiO2 can be detrimental to the optical performance due to crowding of particles.
This paper reports how calcium carbonate, kaolin and talc can partially substitute TiO2 in UV-cured flexo inks, whilst still maintaining a high gloss and suitable opacity. In addition, the impact of extenders on the curing efficiency has been evaluated.Note de contenu : - Experimental/methodology

KaolinIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Flexographic printing (flexo) has progresed significantly in recent years in terms of attainable quality and resolution achieved. Many developments in the areas of printing plates and anilox rollers, along with an improved understanding of the requirements for obtaining excellent quality have all contributed to this growth. The number of Anilox cells per inch has increased from fewer than 500 to between 700 and 1000, a figure which can produce much higher resolution for skin tones, for example, although the increase in tack requires that the board have a higher surface strength. Sheet smoothness should be optimised and a Parker Print Surf PPS (at 10kPA) roughness of less 3.5 µm is desirable. Note de contenu : - Minerals in paper & ink

- Impact of the board coating on flexo printing : Importance of coating porosity - High colour density - Fast drying - Correct smoothness - Even, low mottle and ability to wet the substrate
- Impact of white minerals as ink extenders : High opacity/transparency as required for ink colour - Correct rheology - Sedimentation - Correct gloss after printing - Cost effective

Revêtements en bâtiment:Peinture en bâtimentIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Using kaolin can now improve the flexibiity and simplicity of formulations, while increasing, scrub and burnish resistance. The author, from BASF, discuss the launch of its latest product.
Mattex PRO aims to make formulating a little easier by simplifying some of the challenges that paint formulators face: from lowering VOCs to eliminating crystalline silica. This new class of calcined kaolin combines the benefits of traditional calcined kaolin along with improved scrub and burnish resistance. Its unique morphology, high Mohs hardness and low oil absorption provide formulating flexibility. Unlike most other kaolin products, Mattex PRO can replace various types of flatting agents, other calcined kaolins and extenders, while simplifying formulations.Note de contenu : - What is koalin ?

Revêtements en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The amount of adhesive included in an aqueous paper coating formulation is critical to the performance and appearance of the final product. While the time-honored “weight ratios” are typically used to formulate pigmented coatings for paper, pigment volume concentration (or alternatively, % void volume) has been found to be much more useful in determining the interactions of pigments with the adhesive on the properties of such aqueous coatings. In this study, slurries of commercial kaolin clay and ground calcium carbonate pigments used in papermaking applications were blended and then centrifuged to determine the maximum packing efficiency of the pigments. Isolated films of coatings made from selected pigment blends and increasing levels of latex adhesive were tested for void volume percentage and tensile modulus. Based on these results, a regression equation between pigment interstitial space and the mechanical strength of different coating films was established.
Note de contenu : - Introduction
