Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Kaolinite is a mineral belonging to the family of aluminosilicates. It is usually referred to as "China Clay" because it was first discovered at Kao-Ling, in China. The term kaolin is generally used fora set of common clay minerals having significant amount of kaolinite.
Of specific commercial interest is the degree of crystallinity of Kaolin that controls the key film property that is brightness, whiteness, opacity, gloss, film strength. Kaolins whiteness and laminar nature makes it extremely suitable for its broad use in coating industry as an extender.
In its hydrous or calcined forms, kaolin is capable of improving the optical, mechanical and rheological properties of a paint. These are widely used in range of PVC paints whether it's glossy, satin or matt paint. They deliver mainly three properties that is increased opacity, whiteness and scrub resistance. In a time when coating manufactures are keen to reduce the TiO2 cost burden, optimization without compromising the performance is a greater challenge, and Kaolin offers an optimum solution.
This paper describes various possibilities and some commercial aspects which Kaolin can create for both TiO2 optimization as well as performance enhancement.Note de contenu : - FUNDAMENTAL REASONS FOR KAOLIN SUPPORTING OPTICAL PERFORMANCE : High PVC paints - Low/mid PVC paints - Kaolin vs other extenders - Materials used - Characterization

Revêtements (produits chimiques):Peinture (produits chimiques)Index. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) pigment has celebrated over 100 years of commercial manufacture and for most of that time it has been the primary white pigment, providing whiteness, brightness and opacity to paints, coatings, plastics, inks, paper and many other applications.
The terms hiding, hide and opacity tend to be used interchangeably in the coatings industry: hiding power and opacity are defined in the standard way as ‘the ability of a substance or coating to obscure a substrate of contrasting colour’. If a coating contains small particles, light passing through the coating can be internally reflected and diffracted at the interfaces between particles and polymer medium, preventing the light reaching the underlying substrate. This light scattering phenomenon is directly influenced by the refractive index of the different phases through which the light passes. In essence, the larger the difference between the refractive index of the pigment/extender and the continuous phase medium, the greater will be the scattering of light.
Titanium dioxide’s high refractive index, carefully controlled physical properties and relative inertness make it the first choice when light scattering is required, although many see TiO₂ as a ‘necessary evil’ and a costly formulation ingredient.
Where the highest levels of wet opacity are desired, TiO₂ outperforms all other pigments and extenders.Note de contenu : - Comparing the wet hide performance of TiO2 and extenders

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The use of ultraviolet light to cure inks in the packaging printing industry has become increasingly common since it has been first developed. lndeed, the need for more visual appeal in packaging, with quicker curing rates and lower waste, has been one of the drivers behind this growth. TiO2 is the most commonly used pigment in white UV cured flexo ink due to its high refractive index providing high opacity even at thin film thickness. Unfortunately, absorbs a portion of the UV spectrum and has a detrimental effect on the curing of the ink. In addition, a high loading of TiO2 can be detrimental to the optical performance due to crowding of particles.
This paper reports how calcium carbonate, kaolin and talc can partially substitute TiO2 in UV-cured flexo inks, whilst still maintaining a high gloss and suitable opacity. In addition, the impact of extenders on the curing efficiency has been evaluated.Note de contenu : - Experimental/methodology

KaolinIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Flexographic printing (flexo) has progresed significantly in recent years in terms of attainable quality and resolution achieved. Many developments in the areas of printing plates and anilox rollers, along with an improved understanding of the requirements for obtaining excellent quality have all contributed to this growth. The number of Anilox cells per inch has increased from fewer than 500 to between 700 and 1000, a figure which can produce much higher resolution for skin tones, for example, although the increase in tack requires that the board have a higher surface strength. Sheet smoothness should be optimised and a Parker Print Surf PPS (at 10kPA) roughness of less 3.5 µm is desirable. Note de contenu : - Minerals in paper & ink
- Requirements for optimised printing on a substrate
- Impact of the board coating on flexo printing : Importance of coating porosity - High colour density - Fast drying - Correct smoothness - Even, low mottle and ability to wet the substrate
- Impact of white minerals as ink extenders : High opacity/transparency as required for ink colour - Correct rheology - Sedimentation - Correct gloss after printing - Cost effective
