ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Wetting of a solid surface by a liquid plays an important role in several phenomena and applications. Wetting of rough surfaces has attracted great scientific interest in recent decades. Superhydrophobic surfaces, which possess extraordinary water repelling properties due to their low surface energy and specific nanometer and micrometer scale roughness, are of particular interest due to the great variety of potential applications ranging from self-cleaning surfaces to microfluidic devices.
In recent years, the potential of superhydrophobic cellulose-based materials in the function of smart devices and functional clothing has been recognized, and in the past few years cellulose-based materials have established themselves among the most frequently used substrates for superhydrophobic coatings.
In the following review, different approaches to synthesize superhydrophobic coatings of silica and cellulose are discussed in detail. Procedures to manufacture superhydrophobic coatings on cotton textiles have also been discussed. In addition to the anti-wetting properties of the coatings, particular attention is paid to the cause for Hydrophobicity, methods to enhance hydrophobie nature of a surface and other incorporated characteristics such as self-cleaning property, Lotus Effect etc. Potential applications for the superhydrophobic materials range from water- and stain-repellent, self-cleaning and breathable clothing to cheap and disposable Zab-on-a-chip devices made from renewable sources with reduced material consumption. Greatest use of superhydrophobic coatings is to manufacture surgical tools, medical equipments and corrosion resistant surfaces.

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 677 Textiles Résumé : Plasma treatment is a dry processing technique. As a result, the textile industry has become more interested in plasma applications as a novel finishing technology that significantly reduces toxic-chemical pollution. Plasma technology is suitable to modify the chemical structure as well as the to¬pography of the surface of the material. Law pressure plasma is extensively used for the surface modification of textiles. The importance of the application of plasma surface modifications on the cotton fabric is to improve the performance functionality of the surface. This paper reviews the effect of plasma treatment on surface modification of bast fibers and their properties. Note de contenu : - What are plasmas ?

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A large number of different materials are used in a wide range of biomedical applications for which biocompatibility is essential. In order to combine this with the desired bulk structural properties, it is frequently desirable to apply some form of coating or other surface modification.
Factors involved in the interactions between the body and implants are discussed. The process of cell attachment to surfaces is complex and takes place in several stages. Depending on the application, this attachment may be essential or highly undesirable.
Surface modification may be based on physical methods such as flame treatment, corona discharge, UV radiation exposure or laser ablation. Chemical methods include etching, surface oxidation, hydrolysis, chemical grafting and surface coating. Various aspects and applications of these technologies are considered.
Surface modification is a very important aspect of the creation of medically viable polymeric and non-polymeric biomaterials and thus the use of coating techniques in the creation of biomaterials has been growing over recent decades as they can improve the application properties of materials in end uses ranging from catheters to endoprostheses and cardiac valves.Note de contenu : - FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS

Technique des plasmasIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effect of air dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment on the chemical structure and morphology of polypropylene (PP) film was studied using UV-VIS (ultraviolet-visible), FT-IR, (Fourier transform infrared), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and AFM (atomic force microscopy). Polypropylene samples were printed using solvent-based gravure ink. An evaluation of the print quality criteria of the treated PP films included measurement of print density and print gloss. SEM investigated the ink laydown on the modified PP film. The results showed that after a few seconds of plasma treatment, both the surface energy and the surface roughness of the treated PP film increased. There was an increase in the absorbance at the almost-visible range, and C=C and C=O bands were found after the air discharge plasma treatment. A short plasma treatment of 15 seconds was found to bring about a dramatic increase in the print density readings, but a decrease in print gloss. The time of the air discharge plasma treatment was found to have no effect on the print density or print gloss at a high ink film thickness. The results showed that air dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment, for a few seconds, is effective in printing and is economical for industrial use (this will be studied in detail in future work).
