Sol–gel processes were carried out between silica particles and silanol groups on the surface of poly (styrene–acrylate) latexes to enhance the roughness and hydrophobicity of composite films. TEM photos revealed that FS-PSA latexes exhibited a clear core–shell structure, and the intermolecular hydrogen bonding guaranteed the uniform dispersion of silica particles. The average diameter data indicated that the copolymerization and sol–gel process had all increased the average diameter of the composite latexes. FTIR and XPS spectra confirmed that two kinds of Si–O bonds existed in the composite films, of which one was related to the Si–O groups of colloidal silica while the other was related to the Si–O–Si groups obtained from the sol–gel processes. SEM and AFM images revealed that the sol–gel processes had increased the roughness of the composite films. The water contact angle (WCA) of the composite films were found to increase with the copolymerization and sol–gel processes. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) curves demonstrated that the FS-PSA/SiO2 composite films exhibited much better thermal stability than the PSA and FS-PSA films.

Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper aims to fabricate new superhydrophobic nanocomposite coating materials to protect the inner surfaces of the petroleum pipelines from corrosion. The batch emulsification polymerization technique (BEM) was used as a facial eco-friendly technique to prepare three hydrophobic (styrene/vinyl acetate) copolymers. The sol–gel method was used to prepare SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) with average size ranging from 90 to 101 nm. The functionalized SiO2-NPs were prepared using hexadecyl trimethoxy silane (HDTS) as a precursor to increasing the hydrophobicity character of the unfunctionalized SiO2-NPs. Three superhydrophobic [(styrene/vinyl acetate copolymer/functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2NPs)] nanocomposites denoted as M1, M3, and M5 were fabricated by incorporating 1, 3, and 5 wt% of the functionalized-SiO2NPs into the styrene/vinyl acetate copolymer, respectively. The effectiveness of the fabricated nanocomposite coating materials was analyzed using contact angle measurement and transmission electron and atomic force microscopies. The results showed that the highest contact angle of 161.21o was obtained by M5-nanocomposite. The highest corrosion efficiency of 99.63% was obtained at 300 ppm concentration of M5-nanocomposite-coated solution, 298 K, and 24 days. Surfaces fonctionnellesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Water repellent SiO2 particulate coatings were prepared by a one-step introduction of vinyl groups on the coating surface. Rough surface structure and low surface energy could be directly obtained. Vinyl functionalized SiO2 (vinyl-SiO2) spheres with average diameter of 500 nm were first synthesized by a sol–gel method in aqueous solution using vinyltriethoxysilane as the precursor. The multilayer SiO2 coating fabricated by dip-coating method was highly hydrophobic with a water contact angle of 145.7° ± 2.3°. The superhydrophobic SiO2 coating with a water contact angle up to 158° ± 1.7° was prepared by spraying an alcohol mixture suspension of the vinyl-SiO2 spheres on the glass substrate. In addition, the superhydrophobic SiO2 coating demonstrated good stability under the acidic condition. However, it lost its hydrophobicity above 200°C because of the oxidation and degradation of vinyl groups. Verre -- RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Superhydrophobic coatings have opened new vistas in the field of self-cleaning surfaces by having improved performance, robustness and preservation of cleaning agents including water. Presently, fluoropolymers are extensively explored and used for this purpose. However, the major drawback accompanying fluoropolymers is formation of environmentally persistent and toxic compounds, viz. PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) on their degradation raising concern on their use. In the present study, an effort has been made to develop a facile process by using an environmentally safe material. A simple dip coating technique is reported to fabricate superhydrophobic surface. SiO2 nanoparticles of size 25–30 nm, prepared by sol–gel route, were dip-coated on glass substrate in multilayers followed by coating of a surfactant to achieve homogeneity of SiO2 layers and enhanced binding with subsequent layer of NUVA-2114 [a commercially used fluorotelomer with chemical composition C2F6(CF2CF2)nX]. It was observed that SiO2 nanoparticles and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant exhibit a synergistic effect on interface stability at optimized SDS concentration. A water contact angle of 152° is achieved. The established method is simple, scalable, environmentally safe and cost-effective. Sulfate de baryumIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Herein, SiO2-coated BaSO4 powders were prepared by a liquid phase deposition method starting from inexpensive Na2SiO3, and a rutile TiO2 film was subsequently coated on the surface of SiO2 using TiOSO4 as the raw material. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the BaSO4@SiO2@TiO2 composite showed a refraction index of 1.90 and a whiteness of 92.4. The morphology of the cladding film showed that the composites were well dispersed with a small amount of agglomeration. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis indicated that a uniform-coated layer of dense TiO2 film on the surface of BaSO4 particles was achieved by coating an amorphous SiO2 interlayer. The electron binding energy and relative intensity of Ti 2p, Si 2p, Ba 3d, and O 1s as a function of the coating process were obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The coating mechanism of SiO2 on the surface of the BaSO4 particles and the coating process of TiO2 on the surface of SiO2 were explored. SiO2 formed at the early stage of the reaction was coated on the surface of BaSO4 by electrostatic adsorption, and the TiO2 produced by hydrolysis at the later stage was coated on the surface of SiO2 by chemical bonding, generating Ti-O-Si bonds at the interface between SiO2 and TiO2 particles, as well as a continuous dense TiO2 film by continuing the condensation reaction. A simple process and inexpensive raw materials were employed to realize the facile synthesis of BaSO4@SiO2@TiO2 composites with good dispersion and high whiteness, greatly reducing the amount of TiO2 used and the production cost, which has important guiding significance for production within the coating industry.
