Revêtements -- Séchage sous rayonnement ultravioletIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : It is important for everyone in the value chain to remember that low migration printing for indirect food packaging is not just about the inks and raw materials used to produce them. Responsible formulators should use the best available guidelines and recommendations where the legislation is currently incomplete and these should be applied to each of the separate components of composite packaging materials. Migration data for food packaging should always be generated under realistic and practical conditions, by accepted analytical methods, as the nature of substrates, foodstuffs and converter operating conditions can be diverse. It is recommended that migration testing is conducted by an expert accredited laboratory.
Examples of accredited laboratories with experience in testing UV/EB coated/printed food packaging can be found using the links in the box.
It is ultimately the responsibility of the packaging designer, the printer/converter that manufactures the packaging and the distributor of the product to ensure that the packaging produced meets the requirements of the regulations. Advice and guidance on selection of appropriate materials for the end use of the packaging is readily available via trade associations and raw material manufacturers to help ensure compliance.Note de contenu : - Switzerland system in place

Produits chimiques -- MigrationIndex. décimale : 667.4 Encres Résumé : In 2005, traces of isopropylthioxanthone (ITX) were discovered in different beverages. This a photo initiator used in UV-curing printing inks. As a result of set off, which may occur while the prints are wound, small amounts of ITX make contact with the unprinted reverse and (while the packaging is made and filled) also the food inside. This fact was discussed in detail controversially with the result that 'printing inks for food packaging' are now given particular attention by the general public, political representatives and authorities.
The regulation (EC) N°. 1935/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food requires that materials and articles, including active and intelligent materials and articles, shall be manufactured in compliance with good manufacturing practice so that, under normal or foreseeable conditions of use, they do not transfer their constituents to food in quantities which could :
- Endanger human health
- Bring about an unacceptable change in the composition of the food or
- Bring about a deterioration in the organoleptic characteristics thereof
Specific laws relating to printing inks - ie specifying limit values, assessment methods, permitted or prohibited components - have not yet been enacted. the result of this situation is that attempts are being made to apply directives of related technical areas at least partly and those printing ink manufacturers who have joined the European Printing inks Association, EuPIA have additionally commited to applying 'Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in the production of printing inks for food packaging'.Note de contenu : - Plastic directive

Polymères -- BiodégradationIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Vast quantities of food are thrown away every year. Modern plastic packaging keeps food fresh and preserves its flavor for longer, so it reduces the amount of valuable produce that is wasted. At the same time, politicians are calling for more environmentally friendly packaging. Kuraray provides key barrier materials for this, including biodegradable polymers that are impermeable to gas.
