The periodic unit of the flow channel was modeled as a dynamic system of complex duct flow. The finite volume method was used to solve the three-dimensional flow of purely viscous non-Newtonian fluid. Fluid particle tracking was performed by a fourth-order Runge–Kutta scheme. The effect of the baffle height on the mixing kinematics was investigated numerically. Poincaré sections were applied to reveal the different patterns and sizes of the KAM tubes. Distributive mixing was then visualized by the evolution of passive tracers initially located at different positions. The variance index and residence time distribution (RTD) were used to evaluate the statistical results. Among the four test cases, the results showed that the case with the baffle height equal to the screw depth had the largest chaotic mixing region, but the shortest mean residence time and the narrowest broadening of RTD under the same pressure gradient. The aim of the present work was to investigate the principle of non-Newtonian capillary rheometry for quality control purposes. In the investigation, three series of acrylic-based viscoelastic coating samples with different types and concentrations of pigments and thickening agents were used, and the rheological measurements were compared to results obtained with the so-called Stormer viscometer and an advanced off-line rheometer. A detailed analysis of the potential measurement implications was also conducted. For shear stresses from 15.0 to 350.0 Pa (the upper boundary), the novel capillary rheometer was found to provide results in good quantitative agreement with the advanced rheometer when sample holding time, and thereby shear history, was properly controlled. At a shear stress between 1.0 Pa (lower boundary) and 15.0 Pa, the agreement was not as good, with a difference in results of the non-Newtonian capillary rheometer and the advanced rheometer between 15% and 74%. The resolution of the capillary rheometer was sufficiently high to allow detection of the rheology changes associated with variations in coating formulations of pigment volume and rheology modifier concentrations. In summary, for fast on-line evaluation of coating rheology, the principle of capillarity has been demonstrated to be a varied and robust technique. Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION

The simplified viscocapillary model derived from the 2D equation of motion with the shear-thinning Carreau liquids bounds the uniform coating regime without defects such as leaking, bead break-up, and mid-gap invasion in dual-layer coating systems. The coating bead flows from experiments and finite-volume-based 2D simulations with the volume-of-fluid scheme demonstrate the performance of the viscocapillary model in reliably tracking the upstream meniscus position of the bottom layer in the coating bead region. The onset of leaking, bead break-up, and mid-gap invasion defects is strongly affected by the rheological properties of Carreau-type coating liquids and the flow ratio between the top and bottom layers. In particular, the relative thickness of the shear-thinning bottom layer at the onset of mid-gap invasion is smaller than the well-known 1/3 value in the Newtonian case, depending on the degree of shear thinning. Système de pulvérisation (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The present contribution deals with numerical and experimental studies of the primary liquid breakup process using a high-speed rotary bell atomizer. The first part of the investigations focuses on the film formation on the distributor disk and the inner surface of the rotary bell. Numerical simulations using the volume-of-fluid approach were carried out. A non-Newtonian liquid that has shear-thinning behavior is used to investigate the effect of the viscosity on the initial wetting, the film formation process, and the film thickness distribution on the bell. A nonhomogeneous film structure is found on the inner surface of the rotary bell. This is also observed in experimental investigations using a high-speed camera. The second part focuses on the disintegration process of the paint liquid in the near bell region. As inlet conditions for the breakup simulations, the properties of the liquid film at the bell edge, i.e., film thickness, velocities, and apparent viscosity, resulting from the film formation simulations were applied. Two different liquid disintegrations in the near-field were found, which were also observed in experimental investigations using a high-speed camera. Furthermore, user-defined functions were compiled in ANSYS Fluent to uniquely identify and characterize droplets formed through the breakup process. In this way, droplet properties such as diameter, velocity, and position can be determined. Note de contenu : - CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ATOMIZER : Experimental setup and measuring techniques
