Cardanol, a metasubstituted phenol, is a renewable organic resource obtained as a byproduct of the cashew industry. Furfural, an aromatic aldehyde, is also a renewable resource obtained as an agricultural waste product. Novolac resin has been synthesized by the condensation of cardanol with furfural in the presence of an oxalic acid catalyst and using varied molar proportions of the reacting monomers. The reaction was performed at 120°C. The progress of the reaction was monitored by determining the free formaldehyde and free phenol content. The prepared cardanol–furfural-based novolac resins were further characterized by various techniques such as infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis. The resins were cured using the most suitable agent, hexamethylenetetramine. The differential scanning calorimetric technique was used to investigate the curing behavior of the prepared samples. The cured film samples were used for the determination of mechanical properties such as adhesion, flexibility, scratch hardness, gloss, and impact resistance; these cured film samples were also used to observe the effect of various chemicals and solvents (chemical resistance properties) such as sulfuric acid, acetic acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and methanol, methyl ethyl ketone, xylene, and deionized water, respectively, on the surface of the film. The resulting coatings based on prepared cardanol–furfural resin were found to have excellent mechanical and chemical resistance properties. However, the generally presence of formaldehyde greatly restricts the widespread application of amino resins. In this study, furfural, an organic compound derived from biomass material, was used to substitute for formaldehyde in the synthesis of melamine resin based on an alkaline-acid procedure. The as-synthesized formaldehyde-free melamine resin (MRf) showed excellent performances in leather processing. FTIR and 13C-NMR were used to characterize the chemical structure of MRf. The particle size as well as zeta potential were also determined. The retanning performances of MRf indicated that the overall performances of MRf are comparable to conventional formaldehyde contained melamine resin (MR) and commercial melamine resin (CMR). In particular, the thickness of the leather retanned by MRf was enhanced around 10.33%, which is significantly higher than that of controls MR (6.16%) and CMR (5.94%). Color measurements showed that MRf imparted leather with higher dark intensity. This present work demonstrated that furfural could be a potential candidate to replace formaldehyde in the production of formaldehyde-free melamine resin. Furfural

Tannage Résumé : Sulfonated amino resins are an important class of polymers which are used as retanning agents in the leather industry. There is challenge for such resins to be synthesised without formaldehyde to satisfy the strict regulation in leather goods. In this work, formaldehyde-free melamine based retanning agents have been synthesised by acid catalysed process using furfural as condensing agent and sodium metabisulfite as the sulfonating agent. Sulfonated melamine furfural (SMFr) resins were synthesised using different molar ratio of melamine, sodium metabisulfite and furfural. Stable and water-soluble resins were produced without etherification.
The sodium metabisulfite to melamine ratio (SMB/M) was changed from 0.5-2.0 and furfural to melamine mole ratio (Fr/M) was varied from 2-6. The viscosity behaviour of the produced resins wâs evaluated with the increasing trend of sulfonation and increasing mole ratio of furfural to melamine. Functional group analysis and conversion of reactants into product was elucidated by FTIR.
Synthesised formaldehyde-free resins (SMFr) were comparatively evaluated as retanning agents on goatskin wet-blue against a commercially available sulfonated melamine formaldehyde (SMF) resin. The retanning performance of synthesised resins was studied and found better than that of the commercial SMF resin.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials and equipment - Preparation of SMFr resin
