Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : Surfactants encompass a variety of compounds that are used in various ways. The term 'surfactant' is derived from 'surface-active agents, and as the name implies, the compounds are used to alter surface phenomena. These chemicals will reduce surface tension and improve wetting and spreading (wetting agents); aid in dispersion of pigments in formulated products (dispersants); inhibit foam formation (defoamers) although others will stabilize foams; and cause or improve emulsion formation (emulsifiers). The performance of a surfactant in lowering the surface tension of a solution can be discussed in terms of the concentration required to produce a given surface tension reduction and the maximum reduction in surface tension that can be obtained regardless of the concentration. These are referred to as the surfactant efficiency and effectiveness respectively.
PhotocatalyseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Titanium dioxide (Ti02) is well known for its photocatalytic capabilities, and its applications coverl different areas, such as wastewater treatment, sunscreen and ultraviolet (UV) blocking, among others. Its application as a photocatalytic additive for self-cleaning properties has been reported with different substrates, resulting in stain degradation. As such, the goal of this work was to functionalise two types of nubuck leather, conferring on them self-cleaning properties. For this purpose, two photocatalytic materials were tested: a commercial TiO2 (Degussa P25 Ti02) and Si02@Ti02 nanoparticles, which were applied onto leather surfaces by a spray coating technique. The hydrophilic behaviour of these two types of nubuck leather was determined by contact angle (CA) measurement, using the sessile drop technique. The finished samples of nubuck leather were characterized by measuring their diffuse reflectance. The self-cleaning properties of finished nubuck leather samples were evaluated through their ability to photodegrade an organic stain, rhodamine-B dye. The P25 TiO2 and Si02@TiO2 particles did not provide self-cleaning properties for the two types of nubuck leather, indicating the need for more in-depth research on the use of these particles for self-cleaning purposes. Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : We report on a simple and large-scale method for the fabrication of mechanically durable superhydrophobic coatings via electrostatic powder spray of aerogel micro particles on the fibrous substrates. The coatings are obtained by dip-coating fibrous substrates in silicon rubber/toluene solution, followed by the electrostatic spray of aerogel micro particles on the samples. The method is applicable to a large number of fibrous substrates with different pore sizes. Depending on the silicon rubber solution concentration, it is possible to obtain surfaces with hierarchical morphology. The wetting behavior dependent on the concentration of silicon rubber/toluene solution can provide coatings with static water contact angles (160°–168°) and sliding angles (3°–21°). Fibrous surfaces obtained were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and static water contact angle measurement. Also, mechanical durability of the surfaces was examined using high pressure airflow, sandpaper abrasion test, and water static pressure.

Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : In this study, the feasibility of obtaining superhydrophobic polyethylene parts by rotational molding has been confirmed. The superhydrophobicity is obtained through the surface modification of the thermoplastic by using a microrough aluminium mold. The treatment used to create the microroughness of the mold was an electrochemical process followed by heating at 180 °C. Once the superhydrophobic aluminium mold has been prepared, several rotomolding cycles were carried out. The mold was then used for obtaining rotomolded test cube parts using a conventional polyethylene grade. The behavior of the parts under a water jet show a superhydrophobic behavior of the surface, fact confirmed by the measurement of contact angles above 145°.
