Index. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : A novel method for dyeing human hair fibres using coloured silica nanoparticles of 206 nm has been developed. Diffusion of coloured silica nanoparticles into hair fibres has been investigated; silica nanoparticles do not penetrate at all, or do so only sparingly, into the structure of Caucasian virgin hair. However, coloured silica nanoparticles diffused readily into bleached hair fibres. Scanning electron microscopy showed that coloured silica nanoparticles were present mainly in the outer regions of the hair structure (the inner layers of the cuticle and the outer region of the cortex). It was found that the silica nanoparticles were physically entrapped in the hair fibres and results showed a good shampoo fastness to washing.

Terpolymère acrylonitrile butadiène styrèneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nickel coating was directly electroplated on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic substrate using a new method. The substrate surface was first coated by thin polyaniline film, then silver particles were deposited on the surface in order to improve the electrical conductivity. Three different acids (perchloric, nitric, and sulfuric acid) were used to synthesize the primary polyaniline film. The method adopted in the present study was not based on incorporation of silver particles within the polyaniline matrix; rather, the silver was deposited on the substrate surface. The electrical conductivity of the samples was increased to a level high enough for direct electroplating of nickel. The sample synthesized using nitric acid showed the finest grain size (1.57 µm) and greatest thickness of the final nickel coating (57 µm). The sample synthesized using sulfuric acid exhibited the lowest electrical resistance (0.008 Ω). In addition, the nickel coating deposited on the surface of the sample synthesized using perchloric acid exhibited the strongest adhesion to the substrate (5B according to ASTM standard). Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Despite its industrial importance, the subject of freeze-thaw (F/T) stability of latex coatings has not been studied extensively. There is also a lack of fundamental understanding about the process and the mechanisms through which a coating becomes destabilized. High pressure (2100 bar) freezing fixes the state of water-suspended particles of polymer binder and inorganic pigments without the growth of ice crystals during freezing that produce artifacts in direct imaging scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of fracture surfaces of frozen coatings. We show that by incorporating copolymerizable functional monomers, it is possible to achieve F/T stability in polymer latexes and in low-VOC paints, as judged by the microstructures revealed by the cryogenic SEM technique. Particle coalescence as well as pigment segregation in F/T unstable systems are visualized. In order to achieve F/T stability in paints, latex particles must not flocculate and should provide protection to inorganic pigment and extender particles. Because of the unique capabilities of the cryogenic SEM, we are able to separate the effects of freezing and thawing, and study the influence of the rate of freezing and thawing on F/T stability. Destabilization can be caused by either freezing or thawing. A slow freezing process is more detrimental to F/T stability than a fast freezing process; the latter actually preserves suspension stability during freezing.

Tannage Résumé : In this study, the dry heat resistances of the leathers tanned with different agents such as vegetable, glutaraldehyde, zirconium, phosphonium and chromium were investigated. The morphological characterisation of the tanned leathers was performed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) based on the grain surface and cross section of the leather samples. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was employed to analyse the molecular structure of the tanned leathers. The results showed that the tanned leathers have different dry heat resistances measured at 150°C and 200°C for 30 minutes which are not in parallel with their hydrothermal stability values. The study presented has established that because of the covalent bonding with collagen, usage of chromium is an effective tanning system in achieving the highest dry heat resistance. Because of good filling properties the dry heat resistance values for vegetable and zirconium-tanned leathers were found to be better among the other tanning processes. Note de contenu : - Materials

Revêtement -- Séchage:Peinture -- SéchageIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hollow latex particles are used as white pigments for paints and paper coatings. In the coating dispersion, each hollow particle is filled with water. As the coating dries, water vacates the latex, leaving an air-filled void sized to scatter light (~0.5 µm) within each particle. Examinations of dried coatings reveal that hollow particles can collapse, decreasing their light scattering efficiency. Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryoSEM) was used to characterize the microstructure of coatings containing hollow latex during drying. Images suggest latex voids empty after air invades into the coating interstitial space and collapse occurs late in the drying process. The effects of temperature (10–60°C), humidity (20–80%), and binder concentration (0–30 wt%) on particle collapse were also studied through SEM of dried coating surfaces. High drying temperature, high humidity, and low binder concentrations promoted collapse. For hollow latex particles with porous shell walls, temperature and humidity had little effect, whereas binder increased collapse. From these results, a theoretical model is proposed. During drying, diffusion of water from the particle creates a vacuum inside the latex. The vacuum is either relieved by nucleation of a gas bubble from the dissolved air in the water-filled particle or it causes the particle to collapse by buckling.
