ViscositéIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : In many reactive coating systems, such as silicones, the viscosity increases with time. Inhibitors are usually added to control this reaction process. However, the reaction still continues, and after a long time, the viscosity can be so high that it becomes difficult to maintain coatability, coverage and coat weight. In extreme cases, the coating bath can gel and can no longer be applied.
From the application standpoint, it is desirable to have a formulation with a sufficient bath-life. From a productivity standpoint, it is desirable to have higher line speeds. A faster reacting system is desired, as the applied material can be cured to a film rapidly. On the other hand, a faster curing system may have a shorter bath life. Thus, there is a necessity to balance the need for a faster curing system with the need for sufficient bath life.
The purpose of this article is to describe:
- a method for measurement of viscosity as a function of time at a controlled temperature;
- the effect of temperature on the viscosity-time profile; and

This article evaluated the adhesive options available to the optical engineer with particular emphasis on UV-curing resins. It has discussed the unique benefits of the new AAAs for optical assembly. It has attempted to show how the features of faster cure and higher bond strength yield low stress bonds. Additionally, it has attempted to address the major concerns of optical assemblers and show how this new line of adhesives may solve current problems and offer new solutions for designers. The adhesive technology for such bonding replaces (or in some cases, augments) methods such as riveting, welding or mechanical fastening with bolts and screws. It is worth noting that adhesive and other joining methods can work together. While adhesive bonding provides sufficient strength, the addition of a few appropriately placed rivets provides instant alignment, jigging and clamping advantages.
To meet the requirements of structural applications, suitable adhesives must have a combination of high shear, tensile and peel strength, along with maximum stress, impact, and shock absorbent capabilities. Because this particular set of criteria is not always easy to combine, structural adhesives feature a range of differing product characteristics and chemistries. In addition, they are designed to bond a diverse selection of materials, including composites, wood, metal and glass.
Structural adhesives also provide benefits over conventional methods of joining that include reduced weight, improved fatigue resistance, uniform stress distribution and the ability to join dissimilar materials. In many instances, less critical tolerances can be specified because of the gap-filling capability of many structural adhesives. Structural adhesives can fall into five technologies: epoxies, acrylics, polyurethanes, modified silanes and silicones. Why is such a variety needed, and where is each adhesive used?Note de contenu : - Examining epoxies

Electrical and electronic systems provide the power to start up, monitor and control virtually every operating system and component on the vehicle.
The typical automobile has more than 4000 feet of copper electrical wire, 1300 electrical connections, between 200 and 300 electrical connectors and anywhere from 15 to 60 electrical motors. Overall electrical content has been increasing 7% annually throughout the 1990s and is expected to continue at that pace.
"Electrical problems are a leading cause of breakdowns and a major warranty cost for automakers," said Matt Donelan, automotive marketing manager for Loctite Corp., Rocky Hill, Conn.
For the past three decades Loctite has been a supplier of sealing, bonding and potting materials for automotive electrical systems. Primary applications include:
- Liquid silicone gaskets for electrical housings and components, providing rugged, high-temperature hermetic seals that are removable for servicing operations.
- Liquid resin impregnation of pin connectors, switches, capacitors and wiring harnesses through a proprietary vacuum sealing process called Flexseal. This systems seals microscopic leak paths with an anaerobic acrylic that also boosts electrical insulation properties (see case study). Flexseal protects a wide range of wiring harnesses and connectors, including those that control airbags and anti-lock brakes.
- High-performance compounds in cooling fans in radiators, entertainment systems, engine controllers and lighting applications.
"Nothing changing faster than automotive electrical systems", Donelan said, noting that Loctite is constantly testing materials for future applications. Among these are electrical motor armature balancing compounds and high-temperature, low outgassing potting compounds to prevent corrosion of electrical and electronic components.Note de contenu : - Leakproof oil sensors
