The effectiveness of an intumescent system is dependent on the strength and ability of the char to remain intact upon exposure to fire. Many approaches have been employed to measure the strength of the intumescent char, but there still remains the need for an established standard procedure. In the present study, the compressive strengths of reinforced and unreinforced intumescent chars are evaluated using the compression test for cellular materials (ASTM 1162 00). This standard procedure enabled easy evaluation of compressive strength by employing the principle of deformation force as a function of the axial displacement of char under an active load by using the common universal tensile testing machine. The force–deformation graph revealed an exponentially increasing curve with two distinct regions, an initial region of low force to high deformation representing the collapse of the cellular pores and a high-force–low-deformation region attributed to the bulk mass effect of the compressed char. The results showed that the force needed to compress a bauxite residue-reinforced char to 10% deformation increased by 59%, while the compression strength increased by 13.08% over the control char. PolycarbonatesIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The alignment of polymer chains is a well known microstructural evolution effect due to straining of polymers. This has a drastic influence on the macroscopic properties of the initially isotropic material. In this work, cold forming is performed at room temperature on a tensile testing machine. Polycarbonate films are examined in two loading phases. In the first phase, the specimen is loaded to induce anisotropy, and in the second, it is re-loaded, while the material direction is varied. The investigations are supported by an optical measurement system to gain knowledge about the inhomogeneous material behavior in the initial loading phase and about the anisotropic homogeneous behavior during the re-loading phase. Two dimensional strain contours are obtained from the test data. Additionally, we propose a method for approximation of the macroscopic true stress and compare the results with a common approach based on volume consistency. In the future, the test data will set a basis for parameter identification of constitutive equations taking into account a combination of inhomogenous and homogenous material behavior, exhibiting strain induced anisotropy.

Réticulation (polymérisation)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The curing stress and deformation of epoxy resin and aramid fiber/epoxy composites was measured using Digital Gradient Sensing (DGS) technique. First, the working principle of the DGS method was explained, and the governing equations were derived based on angular deflections of light rays. Then the angle deflection of light rays due to curing stress of epoxy resin was measured, and the effect of the fiber bundle and aramid fiber fabric on the stress distribution during formation was analyzed. The experimental results show that angular deflections of light rays can be related to nonuniform distribution of curing stress in epoxy. The fiber bundles and fabric style have important effects on the curing stress distribution. These results play an important role for predicting curing stress and deformation of fiber reinforced composites.
