Tearing strength and ball burst tests are especially relevant for leather goods that will be subjected to significant tearing and bursting stresses during use.
The influence of different fatliquors on tearing and ball burst tests is studied using wet-blue leathers from Ireland as starting material. Leathers were retanned and dyed following a conventional process and then, they were fatliquored with nine different fatliquoring agents provided by Trumpler Española. A 7% of active matter (on shaved weight) was applied. After a final washing, a sample of the treated leathers was kept in "crust" state (without finishing), and the rest received a light finishing process following a conventional recipe.
To estimate differences between sides, the central parts of them were fatliquored with the same combination used as reference (sulphited triglycerides of rapeseed oil/fatty polymer). The characteristic components of the fatliquoring agents used were a) Soy lecithin, b) Sulphited triglycerides of rapeseed oil, c) Acrylic polymer (waterproofing agent), d) Fatty Polymers (sarcosinates), e) Sulphated triglycerides of rapeseed oil, f) Phosphoric Ester, g) C14 Paraffin, h) Sulphonated paraffin, and i) Sulphited fish oil.
Based on the experimental results, treatments with similar effects on tearing and ball burst test behavior were grouped, clustering the fatliquors with similar effects on these characteristics when compared with the results of the non-fatliquored leather. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Finishing is the process in which a polymeric coating is applied in order to improve the appearance and resistance of leather products. The applications at this stage greatly affect the use and appeal of the final products. In this study, the effect of different coating compositions on the physico-mechanical properties of leather was investigated. For this purpose, three different types of finishing formulations including semi-aniline, lightly pigmented and opaque finishes having different covering powers rated from light to heavy, respectively, were applied to the leathers and results were compared with uncoated counterparts. The findings of the study revealed that the application of lightly pigmented finishing statistically increased the tensile strength, single and double edge tear loads, and stitch tear resistance of the leather to a large extent. Semi-aniline and opaque finishing gave lower or, in some cases, statistically insignificant increases in the physico-mechanical properties of the leathers. Tannage Résumé : The effect of molecular weight of acrylic resin retanning agent on its penetration in leather and the properties of the retanned leather were investigated. After retanning chrome tanned leather by four fluorescent acrylic resins with different weight-average molecular weights (Mw) from 5,000 to 200,000, it was observed that the Mw of acrylic resins was not the main factor influencing their penetration in leather. In fact, the dosage of acrylic resin and the charge of leather were more important factors affecting penetration rate. Additionally, an increase in the Mw of acrylic resin led to an increase in the thickness of leather and a decrease in the softness of leather, which is mainly because the acrylic resins with higher Mw can enter larger gaps between collagen fibers and exhibit a better filling effect. Moreover, when acrylic resins were used together with other anionic retanning agents in retanning process, the penetration and distribution evenness of acrylic resins were remarkably improved, and meanwhile the acrylic resins with different molecular weights presented nearly the same effect on properties of resultant leathers. Résistance au rayonnement ultravioletIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Waterborne polyurethane/laponite composites used for leather finishing have been prepared via the solution mixing method. The dispersion stability of laponite and composite emulsions were determined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile testing and UV-Vis spectra were used to test the performance of the resulting films. The results indicate that the nano-particles with negative charges can form highly stable aqueous dispersion under alkaline condition and exhibit good compatibility with anionic waterborne polyurethanes. The emulsions possess good storage stability with an average particle diameter of 80-94nm. The uniformly dispersed clay platelets can markedly improve the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the composites. In addition, the incorporation of small-sized clay is capable of maintaining the transparent appearance of the film and giving an UV-resistant property. PolyacryliquesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The current study attempts to investigate the surface phenomenon and physical characteristics of leather finished with brown pigment and different types of acrylic binders. Using the contact angle measurements of three different liquids on the above finished leathers and films, the surface energy and work of adhesion were evaluated. The pigment to acrylic binder ratio (PABR) for best adhesion of finish film on the leather surface was optimized using the contact angle goniometer. Different types of acrylic binder films were coated and their surface behaviour was studied. The crust leather was coated with different types of pigment-acrylic binder (Very Soft, Soft and Medium Soft) finish formulations. The contact angle of both the acrylic films and the PABR finished leathers were measured against Water, Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and Hexadecane (HD). According to the study’s results, the surface properties of finished leather were directly related to the degree of wetting. The PABR was found to be effective at 1:3 for very soft binder, 1:2.5 for soft, 1:2 for medium soft binders due to higher contact angle and lower surface energy values (γsv). At 1:3 and 1:2.5, the contact angle of very soft and soft binder leather was 82.62° and 83.45° and for medium soft binder it was 82.67° at 1:2 ratio. The surface energy values of optimized PABR of very soft binder (1:3) was 28.29 (mN/M), soft binder (1:2.5) was 27.50 (mN/m) and medium soft binder (1:2) was 29.27 (mN/m). The optimized PABR work of adhesion values of very soft binder, soft binder and medium soft binder was 82.15 (mJm-2), 81.11 (mJm-2), 82.09 (mJm-2). In order to correlate the observed surface properties with leather finish properties, finished leathers were tested for finish adhesion, vamp flexing value, water vapour permeability, wet and dry rub fastness. According to the water vapour permeability, soft and medium binder showed good permeation due to the uncovering of nanopores. But the adhesion, grain crack resistance and grain smoothness were higher in the case of the soft binder. Overall leather properties divulges that the pigment to binder ratio and the type of binder plays an important role in surface properties of the finished leather. This study enables us to determine the optimal PABR for effective finish properties to meet the required leather standards for various usage, as well as better utilisation of finishing chemicals.
