Effects have been made to develop airborne ultrasonic (AU) testing method using non-contact transducers to evaluate the quality of hides and leather. We previously reported the research results demonstrating the AU technology for revealing defects in hides and leather that were difficult to be found during visual inspection. Recently new research was carried out to develop AU methods to nondestructively characterize the mechanical properties of leather. Observations showed a strong correlation between the mechanical properties of leather and the corresponding AU parameters based on the distribution of the transmission time (time of flight) through leather. We also used this nondestructive method to characterize the grain break of leather. Results showed the difference in grain break could be determined from the AU parameters collected from moving the AU sensors over a leather sample. Observations showed the poorer the grain break, the higher the time of flight distribution. In short, this study demonstrated that the tensile strength, stiffness, toughness and grain break could be nondestructively determined by AU. Note de contenu : - Leather stiffness

There are several methods which introduce polarity into oil and provide the path where reactive species of modified oil can interact with water which leads to form a fatliquor. The aim of this work is to introduce an extra polarity into the fatty acid moiety through chemical modification of castor oil by carbene intermediate. The spectroscopic characterisation such as FTIR,
1H-NMR and 13C-NMR of fatliquor have been carried out. Particle size analysis of fatliquor has also been done. The experimental leathers have been tested for physical strength characterisation such as tensile and tear strength verses control and found to have better properties than control. SEM analysis for morphological study of experimental leather were also carried out which clearly indicates the uniform dispersion of fiber bundles due to the fine distribution of the novel and self-emulsifying fatliquor throughout the matrix.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Preparation of novel fatliquor

Tannage Résumé : Silicic acid, commonly derived from cheap and easily available sodium silicate, has recently received great attention for application in leather industry to produce ecological leather with a cleaner approach. However, leather tanned with silicic acid alone is poor in storage stability, which limits its practical application in leather production. In this work, a new environment-friendly combination tannage based on silicic acid and plant tannin was developed to address this issue along with improving the comprehensive performances of leather. The obtained leather was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and so on. The results showed that compared with leather tanned with silicic acid alone, the leather tanned with this combination method possessed improved thermal stability, enhanced mechanical properties, acceptable softness, appropriate hydrophilicity, and especially enhanced storage stability. More importantly, the combination tanned leather with 1:1 of the mass ratio of silicic acid to vegetable tannin (composed of valonea extract and mimosa extract with the same weight) had more prominent comprehensive performances. In addition, the results demonstrated that hydrogen bonding played an important role in the combination tanning process. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonds generated between phenolic hydroxyl groups of polyphenols with silicon hydroxyl groups of silicic acid molecules inhibited the excessive condensation of Si-OH groups between themselves. Subsequently, the assessment of environmental impact revealed the value of BOD5/COD of the wastewater produced in this combination tanning process is more than 0.3, indicating the chrome-free combination tannage based on silicic acid and plant tannin was an environment-friendly tanning technology. These findings therefore indicated that a new chrome-free tanning method with silicon and biomass materials as main tanning agents has potential practical application prospect in leather production.

Tannage Résumé : Zr-Al-Ti complex tanning agent was applied to the cattle hide after bating. The optimum technological conditions were : dosage of tanning agent 12 % of the bated pelt weight, tanning time after water supplement 5 hours, final temperature 40°C, the pH of basification 4.0. There was no need to pickle and add salt, the shrinkage temperature reached 94.6°C. SEM and histological section observations revealed that the fibre bundles were tight and similar to those of chrome-tanned leather, as were its tear strength, tensile strength and elongation at break, suggesting the potential to replace the conventional chrome process. Meanwhile, the new process can also effectively reduce chloride ion contamination.
