ThermochromieIndex. décimale : 677.4 Textiles artificiels Résumé : High-performance fibers that have been exposed to high temperatures usually lose their mechanical properties undetected and, in the worst case, can tear precisely when lives depend on them. These include, for example, safety ropes used by fire brigades or suspension ropes for heavy loads on construction sites. Empa researchers have now developed a coating that changes color when exposed to high temperatures through friction or fire. Note de contenu : Wafer-thin layers with great effect

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Disturbance of domestic ambience by external chemical and biological intruder have a direct impact on general hygiene, safety and sustainability. Although a significant progress has been made in modern science to tackle these problems, their application in coatings has rarely been carried out, which have a huge potential for development of customized coatings, that is on demand coating functionality. Inspired by these technologies, here, in this review we will describe some of the advances in modern science which have application in coatings for improvement of general health, hygiene, safety and sustainability.
Introduction of functionalities in the coatings is the key for developing coatings with desirable properties, for example omniphobic surfaces, nanoparticle and polymers having antimicrobial properties when incorporated in coatings can easily improve the overall hygiene there by health. In similar fashion Piezo electric materials, and TNT color sensors when applied to coatings can detect damage sites in buildings and presence of explosives, thus, increasing the general safety. Furthermore, phase changing materials and coatings that can convert sunlight to electricity offers alternatives for maximizing output from natural resources providing a much sustainable environment.Note de contenu : - HEALTH AND HYGIENE : Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces : A new direction for omniphobic coatings - Anti-microbial coating - Sound dampening coating - Porous coordination polymer

Systèmes moléculaires organisésIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Recently, stimuli-responsive surfaces have gained considerable interest among coatings researchers in industry as well as in academe. To date, many switchable surfaces based on such external stimuli as temperature, electricity, pH, and many others have been designed and developed. Environmentally switchable surfaces have been among the most widely studied surfaces since they are known to exhibit smart behavior under external influence. In the present work, we report the synthesis of hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and amphiphilic polyurethane coatings with tethered hydrophilic and/or hydrophobic moieties. These coatings have been characterized and tested for mechanical properties and surface characteristics using such advanced instruments as the scanning probe microscope (SPM), dynamic contact angle analyzer (DCA), adhesion tester, and nanoindenter. The surfaces with tethered hydrophobic or hydrophilic moieties, when immersed in water, showed remarkable changes in the surface topography, hence, their dynamic surface characteristics. The amphiphilic surfaces, containing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties, showed intelligent behavior in response to the external environment. The ability to tailor surfaces with predictable behavior upon exposure to the external environment opens up enormous opportunities for their potential end-use applications.
