In order to minimise the decay risk, wood can be impregnated with biocides before finishing. However, pretreatment of wood may have an effect on some important properties of surface coatings. The authors impregnated spruce wood specimens with a new preservative formulation, containing the ester of boric acid with an alkanolamine. The aim of this research was to establish a possible influence of this biocide on the performance of acrylic and alkyd stains on pre-treated wood. They studied the drying characteristics, stackability, adhesion, and permeability of the coatings. A boron-based preservative in a treated spruce wood had a pronounced influence on the drying of coatings and on the permeability of the acrylic stain. However, the influence on adhesion of the coatings was only indicated. Note de contenu : - Test systems

Vernis -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Wooden construction materials used in external applications are subject to a large amount of stress. Especially water and, of course, water logging, weighs heavy on many wood materials. It makes the water-loving material swell, facilitates the entry of micro-organisms and helps these to grow. The results : rotting caused by bacteria and decomposition from fungi. It has long been known that dry wood is exceptionnaly durable. In order to increase the useful life of wooden construction components, people strive to protect them from contact with water and use coatings, treatment and other measures to prevent water from getting inside wooden components. StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, the statistical distribution of the reference service life of exterior wood coatings has been calculated for two coating systems: an alkyd oil and a solvent-borne alkyd (stain). The estimated service life has been evaluated, based on exposure tests and on the assessment of experts for another three coating systems (namely a solvent-borne alkyd coating, a water-borne acrylic coating, and a water-borne acrylic stain). It has been shown that the combination of a standard procedure for the measurement of cracking and statistical tools, such as reliability-based methodologies, for predicting the service life of coating systems gives more information regarding reference service life data than purely by a measurement of cracking. TeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study has shown that the environmental impact from the various studied coatings are the dependent criteria on their service lives. The dependence of these criteria has been studied with the help of the integrated design model, developed in this study especially for coatings on exterior wood.
The integrated design for the overall performance showed that the water-borne acrylic coating and the water-borne acrylic stain are the best choice as regards the environmental impact and durability of the coatings.
The discussed surface coating systems were a solvent-borne alkyd coating, a water-borne acrylic coating, a water-borne crylic stain, a solvent-borne alkyd stain and alkyd oil.Note de contenu : - Characterisation

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An EU-funded project seeks to demonstrate that treatments with silicon-based hydrophobisers can protect exterior wood against water penetration, extend its service life and so potentially minimize the use of biocides. Both brush and vacuum impregnation processes showed significant levels of protection and a reduction in water pick-up. Note de contenu : - Five impregnating materials tested
- Wood specimens and application test protocols
- Vacuum process pick-up depends mainly on wood type
- Details of water repellent application by brushing
- Application methods and products compared
- Significant protection against wood damaging fungi
- Partial protection against subterranean termites
- Field testing confirms differences in water pick-up
- Significant though variable benefits achieved
