The reactive diluent was synthesized using IPDI, HEMA, and aminopropyltetraethoxysilane (APTES), resulting in both inorganic and organic reactive groups. The photocuring kinetics was investigated using photo-DSC and real-time FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of the reactive diluent and TEOS oligomers concentration was investigated using impact resistance, pencil hardness, and adhesion. Two glass transition temperatures were observed, indicating a substantial interfacial phase generated between the inorganic and organic domains. The reactive diluent-to-reactive oligomer ratio had a larger effect on the mechanical behavior of the system than the TEOS concentration did. Adhesion improves with increasing TEOS oligomer concentration or reactive diluent concentration until maxima, after which increasing concentration has an adverse effect on adhesion.

TriméthoxysilaneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dispersions were prepared using a trimethoxysilane end-capping agent (DAA-GPTMS) derived from diallylamine (DAA), (3-glycidoxypropyl)methyldiethoxysilane (GPTMS) and modified with edge-hydroxylated boron nitride (hBN-OH) nanosheets. The WPU films containing DAA-GPTMS possessed remarkable hydrophobicity and favorable water repellency, attaining a contact angle of 101.2° and a 52% decrease in water absorption relative to those of the pure WPU. When the contents of DAA-GPTMS and hBN-OH were 7.5 wt% and 0.2 wt%, respectively, the synergetic effect between the DAA-GPTMS and the hBN-OH nanosheets greatly enhanced the physical and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite films, i.e., the stress doubled and the Young’s modulus increased by fivefold compared to those of pure WPU. Embedding 0.2 wt% of the hBN-OH nanosheets in the WPU coatings resulted in a lower corrosion current density (1.0 × 10−10 A cm−2) and more positive corrosion potential (− 0.63 V). The results demonstrate that WPU/hBN-OH nanocomposite coatings possess great potential for corrosion protection.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effect of alumina and silica nanoparticles on mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of UV-waterborne nanocomposite coatings was investigated. The addition of nanoalumina and nanosilica was shown to decrease the hardness because of nanoparticle aggregation. In comparison to the neat coating and despite the presence of aggregates, the scratch resistance of nanocomposite coatings was significantly improved. As expected, the gloss of UV-waterborne coatings was reduced following the addition of nanoparticles due to an increase of the surface roughness. Alumina and silica nanoparticles were found to enhance the glass transition temperature of PUA nanocomposite coatings by hindering the mobility of macromolecular chains at the interface around the nanoparticles. Finally, the interest and efficiency of grafting trialkoxysilanes was demonstrated with the study of nanosilica behavior. Not only was the dispersion of nanosilica enhanced following trialkoxysilanes grafting onto silica nanoparticles, but also the scratch resistance and the adhesion of UV-waterborne coatings containing nanosilica markedly increased even with 1 wt% content. Silica which is recommended in the wooden furniture and kitchen cabinet manufacturing industry as nano-reinforcement provides improved properties well suited in surface coating applications to efficiently protect surface of wood substrates.
