Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Phosphorus source in transparent intumescent fire-retardant (IFR) coatings plays a crucial role in determining its performance against protecting structures from fire. In the present work, naturally occurring environmentally benign phosphorus-rich phytic acid (PA) was used as a phosphorus source. Phosphate ester resin (PER) was synthesized using PA and hyperbranched polyol (HBP), which was then used as a precursor for preparing optically transparent IFR coatings. The prepared PER was further modified with hydrogenated bisphenol-A (DGEHBA)-based epoxy resin in different wt% (25–100) to get PER-1, PER-2, PER-3, and PER-4, respectively. The formation of the PER resins was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance, 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-NMR), and acid value analysis. The transparent IFR coatings were prepared by suitably mixing PER with hexamethoxy methyl melamine (HMMM) resin, and their performance was studied by measuring mechanical properties, optical transparency, thermal stability, fire retardancy, and smoke emission characteristics using various analytical instruments. The combination of PA and hyperbranched polyol improved the physicomechanical properties of PER-based transparent IFR coatings. The char formed after burning was also analyzed using FESEM and UTM. Results revealed that phytic acid and HBP combination increased the height as well as strength of the char. Among the prepared transparent IFR coatings, PER-0 and PER-1 have shown higher char height and strength.

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Wood surfaces have an increased popularity as they combine extraordinary beauty, modern design and the use of renewable materials. Many spectacular high-rise construction projects made out of wood ail over the world can be observed, such as the 85m high Wood Hotel in Mjosa (Norway) or the HoHo building in Vienna (Austria). Wood is also high trending especially in luxury interior design in shipbuilding, aerospace and transportation. Its ecological footprint is also driving demand for wood as a building material. Reducing carbon dioxide is becoming increasingly important in almost ail sectors. In this context, wood can help reduce the amount of CO2 emissions generated by a construction project.
Building regulations exist in areas with higher than average fire risk, such as public buildings like airports and train stations, shopping mails, cinemas, theatres, libraries, schools, offices, hotels, hospitals and many others. Wood in exterior applications — whether natural wood, cross laminated timber or other wooden materials — must perform in fire situations and be protected against fire. The use of wood is permitted if the high-performance requirements of the building regulations and other regulatory requirements are met.
Fire-retardant coatings must not only protect against fire, but also preserve the beauty of wood. Visually appealing and reliable fire protection is possible with intumescent coatings, enabling the safe use of wood-based panel products in both interior and exterior situations - from load-bearing structures to interior trim and exterior cladding.Note de contenu : - Why wood needs a flame-retarfant treatment ?

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The author discusses the advantages of using intumescent coatings as passive fire protection for structural steel.
Increasingly, construction projects are turning to steel as their core
component. Steel enables strong and resilient buildings with wider spans and more open areas to be built more quickly, economically and with a reduced environmental footprint. Protecting steel framed buildings against fire is a vital part of the planning and construction process and safety features are generally a mix of active and passive mechanisms. When fire or smoke is detected, active protection will act to suppress or slow the smoke and flames using equipment, such as fire-doors, sprinklers and alarms. Passive fire protection (PFP) is implemented to protect the building itself by insulating the steel structure to maintain the structural integrity of the building for as long as possible in the event of a fire.
Fires behave differently depending on the fuel source and they tend to fall into two distinct categories. Hydrocarbon fires are fuelled by hydrocarbon compounds, such as petrol, diesel or another oil derivative and are generally associated with the oil & gas industry. Cellulosic fires are caused by the burning of furniture, wood or paper and usually occur within civil infrastructure, such as residential and commercial buildings. Hydrocarbon fires will reach high temperatures much more quickly than those of a cellulosic nature but, even so, a cellulosic fire will reach 500°C in as little as three minutes and then escalate to more than 1000°C shortly afterwards. Temperature versus time charts are well established and standardised for both types of fire and these are used across the world to specify the required protection.Note de contenu : - Safeguarding the structure
