Index. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Clostridioides difficile associated infections (CDI) develop frequently in hospitalized, elderly patients after an antibiotic treatment. The infection is highly contagious and can be transmitted to other patients when cleaning and disinfection measures are insufficient. Textiles like bed linens or health care personnel uniforms can be involved in the spread of CDI. Spore-forming bacteria are difficult to inactivate and laundering processes efficient against pathogens like Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus, may be insufficient for C. difficile spores.
In the present study, the sporicidal effect of laundering processes was investigated systematically. Simulated washing tests were performed with biomonitors containing Bacillus subtilis spores. B. subtilis is a suitable model strain for C. difficile with comparable tolerance against disinfectants, heat and extreme pH values. The efficiency of different Peracetic acid (PAA) and sodium hypochlorite concentrations against B. subtilis spores was tested at different temperatures and contact times. Furthermore, a bleach-containing household detergent was included in the investigation.
PAA concentrations, typically applied in I&I laundry cycles, were able to reduce B. subtilis spores sufficiently. Less effective were the tested NaClO-concentrations. The household laundry detergent failed to remove a significant number of bacterial spores.Note de contenu : - Table 1 : Test conditions of the simulated washing tests (suspension tests with biomonitors)

Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Disperse dyes are not currently applied to wool commercially, in large part because of inadequate wash fastness, but they do have potential, especially for wool-polyester blends. In this study, for the first time hydrogen peroxide was investigated to increase the wash fastness of disperse dyes on wool. In the absence of oxidants, 10 disperse dyes from seven classes imparted colours with a range of depths (K /S 2-26) with wash fastness (grey scale ratings for colour change) grades of 3 to 4-5. Hydrogen peroxide had only small effects on colours and gave only small enhancements to wash fastness, which were limited to anthraquinone, nitrodiphenylamine, disazo and coumarin dyes. The bleach activators Prestogen W and citric acid enhanced the bleaching effect of hydrogen peroxide but did not assist with raising wash fastness. Hydrogen peroxide in post-dyeing scouring made the dyeings brighter but did not significantly enhance wash fastness. Ammonium persulphate, which was included for benchmarking with earlier studies, yellowed the wool and decomposed some dyes. This study extends the range of dye classes whose wash fastness on wool can be improved by ammonium persulphate to now include diazo, coumarin and methine, and confirms that oxidants/free radical initiators have potential for enabling the disperse dyeing of wool.

Protection cutanéeIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Fucoidan is a long-chain polysaccharide found naturally in brown seaweeds. On the back of extensive immuno-modulatory, antiinflammatory, digestive health and anti-cancer research, fucoidan is increasingly being utilised in a range of dietary supplements. In recent years, mounting anti-ageing evidence has also placed this novel marine ingredient on the radar of skin care formulators.
High purity, certified organic fucoidan ingredients with global regulatory acceptance are rapidly rising to the forefront of the blue beauty movement. Not only do they tick all the right boxes in terms of sustainability and ethical sourcing but also in terms of efficacy and ease of formulation. The potential benefits of fucoidan on skin health are increasingly being reported in scientific literature and are capturing the attention of some the world’s leading skin care brands.
Fucoidan’s role in nature is to protect the seaweed against a range of external stresses, including environmental pathogens. Australian biotechnology company Marinova was the first to capture these natural benefits for topical use, launching two high purity fucoidan extracts onto the global skin care market over a decade ago. Backed by clinical evidence, Maritech® Bright, derived from Fucus vesiculosus seaweed, and Maritech Reverse, derived from Undaria pinnatifida seaweed, both offer profound antiageing properties.Note de contenu : - A brightening, anti-ageing & antioxidant combination
